Andrea Ransom

1924 - 2014

Andrea T. Ransom, 90, died peacefully on July 13, 2014 at Providence Seward Mountain Haven in Seward, Alaska. Andrea was born January 12, 1924 to Danish immigrant parents Alfred Andersen Thorp and Andrea Jorgensen Thorp, in Des Moines, Iowa. After graduating in the class of 1942 from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Andrea went to live and work in Phoenix, Arizona, where she met Richard L. Ransom, of Malden-on-Hudson, New York. The couple married on October 17, 1948, and shared a loving, happy marriage, living in Des Moines, Iowa. Andrea was a homemaker and mother of two children; son Scott and daughter Susan. Upon retirement, Andrea and Richard moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, where they enjoyed an active retirement and continued to be involved in the Methodist Church. Andrea was a keen and accomplished sportswoman and nature lover. Among her interests were gardening, golf, bowling, tennis, swimming, photography, reading, sewing, and antique collecting and restoration. Her children recall that her devotion to family was unwavering and that her support and inspiration of their educational, sporting and musical pursuits continue to enrich their lives. After Andrea was widowed in 2000, she moved to Seward, Alaska, to be near family. She resided there for nine years and will be fondly remembered by all who knew her for her warm sense of humour, personal charm and strength of character. Andrea is survived by her brother Jack Thorp, of West Des Moines, IA; son and daughter-in-law Scott and Irene Ransom of Seward, AK; daughter Susan Martin residing in Scotland with her husband William Martin; granddaughter Emily Ransom Golick of Anchorage, AK; grandsons Jack Ransom of Seward, AK; Justin, Ethan and Evan Anderson of Des Moines, IA; Aaron Anderson of Mason City, IA; and nine great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the dedicated staff of the Providence Seward swing bed program and to Seward Mountain Haven. Andrea often commented on the kindness of the staff and the quality of the care she was receiving. A memorial service will be held at Lupine Lodge Seward Mountain Haven at 4:00 Thursday, July 24, 2014. This will be a time for staff, residents, family and friends to worship and reflect.
