Ann Sassara Obituary

From Hollywood to the Homestead, Ann Sassara, Alaska pioneer, loving mother and eager adventurer, hung up her mukluks on Dec. 9, 2010.

Ann was a true Alaskan in the finest sense of the word. In heart, spirit and deed she was one of those fabled people who helped create the friendly, hospitable, open place that Alaska has come to represent in the hearts of romantics around the world. In her 57 years in Alaska, her heart and her house were always open to family, friends and adventuresome spirits. Her beautiful smile greeted old and new friends alike. She was always ready to hear everyone's triumphs and troubles, to offer a meal and a warm bed when anyone needed a snug harbor.

Ann was born in Chicago, Ill., on June 29, 1933, to Karl and Arlene Baackes.

The family moved to Los Angeles, where she attended University High School, made lifelong friends and met her future husband, Charles Sassara Jr. Ann and Chuck married in June 1952, and while Chuck attended UCLA, Ann worked at 20th Century Fox studios.

Upon Chuck's graduation in 1955, they drove to Alaska and settled at Big Lake, operated the Yacht Club, homesteaded at Point MacKenzie, and built and named "Burma Road," which connected Big Lake with the Goose Bay. As remarkable as it may seem, in one short year Ann went from lunching with the likes of Clark Gable in Hollywood to skinning a moose at Red Shirt Lake. This quality allowed Ann to be equally at ease sitting on a log in a Central American jungle or having tea at the White House.

In the early 1960s, they moved to a log home on Bannister Drive that became the ad hoc neighborhood center and the site of many meetings about bringing kindergarten to Anchorage's schools and other community endeavors, including serving as president of the Anchorage Democratic Women's Club.

Ann worked at First National Bank and was cherished by her customers. In the mid-1980's, she operated one of Girdwood's first bed-and-breakfasts.

In addition to her love of Alaska, over the decades Ann developed into a competent ocean sailor, joining Chuck on passages through the Caribbean, Bahamas, Panama Canal, both the Atlantic and Pacific and Alaska. She was aways ready to cast off and unflappable when facing the challenges of the sea.

Blessed by Ann's loving memory are her husband, Chuck; her sister, Mary James; son, Charlie; daughter-in-law, Siri Moss; son, Richard and his wife Mary; and grandchildren, Tyler, Rachel and Annalisa; sister-in-law, Ellen Sassara; niece, Lisa Susich and her family; and nephew, Rick Sassara and his family.

Ann's service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church Thursday at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to AWAIC at www.awaic.org are welcome.

Anne.......always think of you this day, as almost every other day.
Am sipping on a hot cup of coffee as we did most everyday at Saks Cafe, on the corner of the good ol' FNBA building. Of course you were the reason I started drinking coffee......you and your Kaladi Brothers Mocha Java! We would lunch until our favorite boss, Calladine sent someone to fetch us, because they needed a Credit Report! We had some great times.
Thank you for being such a great friend, adopted Godmother, and great Alaskan woman mentor.
Love you More(as you would say with a laugh).......Patrice Buher

Ann was one of those people who entered our lives when we lived aboard our boat, Willeen, in Deale, MD. It was as though we had known her all our lives. We always looked forward to Ann and Chuck just "dropping by" and we always had so many laughs and special times. Even though it has been years since we've seen her, she was always in our thoughts. We will miss not seeing her again. All our love and hugs go to Chuck and their family. Arlene and Will Dovel

As long time sailing friends of Chuck and Ann, we are deeply saddened with the loss of Ann. From Annapolis to East and West Coast of FL, and shores of AL, Chuck and Ann could always locate us, be it a tiny cove in the saw grass of the Intracoastal water way to marinas along the way. You will be missed and we promise to try and keep up with the love of your life Chuck. Best friends, Hal & Katie Ritenour

I was fortunate enough to have met Ann when she and Chuck sailed to Annapolis.
She always had a smile on her face and I will always remember her that way, smiling, laughing and enjoying life. She really knew how to live!!!

I and my daughter will miss "Aunty Ann" by recollecting our many sails with her and Chuck aboard our Pearson ketch the Wavemaker in LI Sound and off the RI Coast.. She mastered the galley and took command of it even if from the first day. And boy did we eat like Kings aboard.. A Mom, my surrogate Aunt, a friend, a teacher and a mentor to my daughter, and an accomplished marksman with the shotgun weapon she kept handy for bear visitis in Gidwood,,she will b e sorely missed. .T Bone NYC

Chuck and family, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved Ann. She was a wonderful and gracious woman that always welcomed me with a beautiful smile and kind word when I visited or we were able to spend time together. Even when I knocked on your door unannounced with family or friends in tow, she was always so welcoming and fun to be around. My condolences to you all. She will be very missed.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Ann’s passing. I had hoped to be at Ann’s service this week, but a family emergency has taken me out of state.

My memories of Ann include the fact that Ann was the original coffee coinsurer in Anchorage! It was thirty two years ago, Ann introduced me to where to get a latte or espresso long before it became fashionable when there was only one place to go! Café Del Mundo on Fireweed.

In 1978 as a young man, new to Alaska from the east coast, Ann and Chuck took me in and made their home, my home. There was always a place to sleep and a warm meal at the ready along with Ann’s great company. Ann always took an interest in me as a person and often peppered me with questions about my family back east and what my latest adventures and exploits were. Ann always challenged me to stretch myself further.

I also remember Ann as an adventurer with a “never say no” spirit. I had the great pleasure to sail with Ann and Chuck from Florida to Panama and through the canal. Nothing fazed Ann and she would stand her watch despite the weather or sea conditions.

Ann will be greatly missed.

My most sincere condolence to Chuck, Charlie and Richard and the extended Sassara family.

Ann, you were my friend, the loving wife and partner of my brother in spirit, and an exemplary mother of two wonderful sons. You and Chuck taught me a lot. I'll never forget your stories of Big Lake and more recently, the story of the bear chasing you and your little dog around your car and how you made it to the cabin first and slammed the door in his face. Godspeed, and may we all meet again for many evenings at the campfires with our loved ones and friends in the land of forever!
