Charles Anderson Obituary

Charles "Charlie" Gustav Anderson Jr., 53, died April 15, 2011, at home in Anchorage.

A public viewing was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel. After a private memorial service, a public reception was held to celebrate Charlie's life at the Hotel Captain Cook.

Charlie was born Feb. 2, 1958, in Anchorage and was raised there.

His life was filled with sports. He broke high school track records, then went on as an Alaska state tennis champion for many years.

Charlie attended the University of Alaska Anchorage and acquired degrees in criminal justice and psychology. He maintained an active lifestyle, raising his son, Chas, and contributing to the Anchorage community.

He worked hard to emerge as a business leader and president of Marsh USA/Anchorage Division.

He was very proud of his Native Alaskan Aleut (Alutiiq) heritage. He was a board member of Cook Inlet Tribal Council.

Six years ago, Charlie's life changed dramatically. Diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) brain tumor, grade IV, he underwent brain surgery at UCSF, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. A pulmonary embolism then occurred, greatly affecting his vision, creating legal blindness and partial paralysis on the right side of his body.

After nearly two years in a wheelchair, he regained not only the ability to walk again but also to run, ski, dance, bike and swim.

He worked extensively with a speech therapist, Anne ver Hoeff, to overcome speech aphasia. Among his many presentations, he gave a testimonial at Challenge Alaska thanking them for the therapeutic ski program and for helping to make dreams come true. He also gave many inspiring talks, including motivational speaking engagements at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Raven's Ball, the Alaska Center for the Blind and numerous schools throughout Anchorage and Eagle River.

Charlie explained his motivations thus: "I am compelled to reach out now and help others."

On Easter Sunday 2007, Charlie met Carole Chambers, a volunteer ski coach for Challenge Alaska. They fell in love and married on Maui on Nov. 13, 2008, recently celebrating their second anniversary with a return trip to Hawaii.

Charlie and Carole had begun writing an inspirational book, a project currently under way with film producer/author with Francine Lastufka Taylor.

Much can be said regarding Charlie's courage and spirit, and at this moment, words seem inadequate, his family said: "In time to come, we will endeavor to capture the incredible spirit of Charlie and hope to inspire others. We are on a mission to not only advocate for disabilities, legal blindness, and brain cancer, but also for palliative and hospice care."

Charlie celebrated the anniversary of his survival and remission at the five-year mark in February 2011. Then, in March, Charlie's MRI revealed that the tumor had returned, inoperable due to close proximity to his brain stem. He spent the past year undergoing an aggressive chemo regimen at the Alaska Native Medical Center.

"On Charlie's behalf, our family thanks our doctors and nurses at Duke University Brain Tumor Center, UCSF, Providence Hospital and Alaska Native Medical Center," his family said.

"Countless angels have touched our lives in amazing ways and we send our heartfelt appreciation to all!"

Surviving Charlie are his wife, Carole Anderson; son, Chas Anderson; parents, Chuck and Georgia Anderson; sister, Patti and her husband Jim Juliussen; niece, Katrina and her husband Darin Moberg and their daughters Olivia and Aleah; and cousins, Denise Winter, Dennis Winter (Debbie), and Cindy and her daughter Chelsa Winter. Also surviving are special friends and family, Kristina Anderson (Chas' mother), Wyche Ford, Cheri and Karl Bohlin, and niece and goddaughter, Kylie Bohlin. In addition, many members of Carole's family survive Charlie, including her brothers and sisters, Susan Armendariz, Paula Martin, Daniel Audick, Christopher Audick, John Audick, David Audick and Michael Audick and their families.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Brain Tumor Association (www.abta.org) and Challenge Alaska (www.challengealaska.org).

As I write, flooded with special memories of Charlie, with his wife and best friend, Carole at his side, his sister, Patti, always nearby, I am recalling the day over four years ago when Carole phoned to say that she'd been seeing someone very special, and had fallen madly in love. It was very touching when she told me Charlie's story and she described this tall, blond, good looking man with a great sense of humor. Not long after, my husband, Larry and I met with them at the symphony, and it was quite apparent why Carole loved this man. Charlie was so full of goodness, positive attitude, and greatness. He became an inspiration over the years to both of us and also to many others. Just a few weeks ago, it was shocking to us when we heard of Charlie's sudden downhill spiral, and then his demise so soon afterwards while we were on a trip to Europe and couldn't be back here. We lit candles in every cathedral or monastary we saw through six countries. Everywhere we went we prayed for Charlie and his beloved Carole. We know you will miss him but trust that the qualities he exemplified will help support and guide you during this difficult time. You have our sympathy and friendship, and I want to assure you that both Larry and I will be here for you and for Charlie's loving sister, Patti, as well. It's been a pleasure to get to know Patti through both you and Charlie. Charlie was truly in that class of men "above he common herd." Carole, you are a woman of great courage, my friend, the affection and love that brought you close to Charlie will surely be a source of strength for you now. Thorton Wilder once said "The highest tribute to the dead is not grief, but gratitude." We offer you our affectionate sympathy, many great memories of a wonderful man, and our gratitude for sharing Charlie with us. Much love.

Hi Carol: I just wanted to give you my love and encouragment and prayers. I was blessed to meet you and Patti when you came to Anchorage Lutheran Church one evening and I was there. What a blessing to meet both of you, to know a bit about your story and your loss and be able to just know you for a little while and ask God to comfort you and help you through this. You are an incredible woman, and I know God brought you and Charlie together for a wonderful reason. You are such a lovely woman, and I just am so happy I met you. I continue to pray for you, Patti, and your entire family each day. I know from experience that this is not easy, and won't be. It was also wonderful to see you in church on Sunday. I hope you continue to join us, and allow our "family" to love you and help you know God's love through friends and extended family here at Anchorage Lutheran. God be with you and bring you comfort and love each day. I am so sorry for your loss. Love and Prayers, Kathy Callies

My deepest condolences to the family of Charles Anderson. I remember him from East High School, though he was in a higher grade than I. He always had a nice thing to say and will be missed. But now is in a much better place.

Charles Anderson, you will be missed. May God Bless your family and friends at this time.

Charlie could be noticed all that way down the hall at East Anchorage High School. Not only because of his outstanding good looks, adorned always proudly in his red and blue letter jacket, but because he appeared angelic. After getting to know Charlie, I realized that he had a personality exactly as he appeared. He was and is one of the kindest guys I've ever known. I am so sad that his fight is over, yet, at peace that he is now with the angels and his heavenly Father.... where he belongs. I'm thankful that he is not experiencing anymore pain, no more suffering, at peace, resting...oh... who am I trying to fool, he's probably playing a really great tennis match with the arch angels. You will be truely missed Charlie, but remembered always and forever! See you soon.

Charlie, was an inspiration to me as I was growing up and living down the street from his family. All of us girls on the street and my little sister used to always walk down and ask if we could help him wash his car. He was a great looking young man and e was very shy and always lent a hand when we needed help fixing something.
One of my most favorite memories is my going to big lake and Charlie water sking on one ski and showing off and he had every right, he was awesome. Charlie tried 15 time to get me up on 2 skies, well that never happened but boy did it get the laughs with me and with Georgia and Chuck, amazing parents who loved this man unconditionally. My heart hurts for them because I knew how much they loved him and all they meant to him, amazing family.
I just returned from my home Lake Havasu and watched the Desert Storm Boat races and Charlie's picture came into my mind several times. I know this also was a place he loved and I was lucky to share both of them with him. Charlie you will be missed my friend! Love your E.24th Friend Phyllis Kruger

My family had the privilege to meet up with Charlie and Carole in Maui last November while they celebrated their anniversary. Truly remarkable is what comes to mind first, unbelievably strong second, and deeply saddened third. We will miss him, but hold near our memories. My favorite is the huge smile he gave me while at Alyeska in February. That smile will forever remind me of the true power of love, as that is what Charlie was to us. God Bless Carole and his family. Although it has been since high school since i had seen you this news truly is a sad day for me and for many others. I new you years ago, but it seems like yesterday. You walked this earth with dignity and a humility, that many that may have stood in your shoes would not have handled so gracefully as you did. I use to love to watch you run, You were so fast, and such a good athlete. My best wishes go to all of your family. Charlie will always be in our heart and on our mind. His spirit will live forever and someday everyone will be blessed to once again be with Charlie. Good by my friend, you always treated me on an equal level as you did everyone.

Georgia and Chuck,
Rest assured the old man has already hooked up with Charles and I am sure they are both kick'n back having a laugh watching the sun set.

I close my eyes and I see Charles off to my left running your 640 TnT with dual expansion chambers blasting through the darkness in a blizzard on Big Lake. The image from a night ride he and I went on during an over-night at your Big Lake cabin a few years ago. An image that has stayed with me all these years.

I am sorry that we did not make Charles' funeral and wake so we reach out now. And if Charles is anything like the old man, he will come and visit from time to time, just to prove that his spirit is alive and well.

Peace,
Dennis Falldorf and the Falldorf family.

April 21, 2011

Charles, Georgia and Patti - I am deeply sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. He was a good friend and is the reason I have had a good career in the insurance industry. He was always optimist and had a gentle soul. Have not seen him since 1991 during a luncheon, but kept in touch through many friends in the industry. The summer we spent up at your Big Lake Cabin in 1986 was a great gift of your generosity to a struggling insurance agent. He will be in my prayers and going through these notes, I see people from Rollins Burdick Hunter and when the Alaska Club was the Teamsters. Take care and God Bless he was one of my angels during my early years. Love Megan McCann Davis

I am truly Blessed to have been Charlie’s sister. He supported & loved me thru the best of times & worst of times. He believed in me & gave me strength I never knew I had. Knowing & loving Charlie has made me a better person. He was strong, kind, compassionate & the most forgiving person I have ever known. I’ve always considered Charlie my “Big Brother” rather than my “Baby Brother”, because I felt safe knowing he was on my side. I looked up to him & admired him more than mere words can ever express. Upon Charlie’s initial diagnosis 6 years ago, the prognosis & survival rate gave Charlie far less time than he actually ended up having. It was, a 2nd chance, so-to-speak, for Charlie. He took full advantage of that 2nd chance & lived every single day to the fullest.
He continued to be a wonderful father to his son Chas-- his biggest inspiration & most important accomplishment. Charlie & Chas have shared many special times over these last few years which memories will stay with him always. Charlies’ son Chas is an amazing young man & I credit Charlie, Chas’ Mother Kristina, his Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, special Friends & last, but certainly not least, Caroles’ influence for his fine Character. I am so proud of you Chas & am honored to be your Aunt Patti. Something I feel compelled to share with those who do not already know is that 4 years ago Charlie met & later married a wonderful Angel sent from Heaven. Carole has made Charlie extremely happy & her love & devotion to him has truly been a Blessing. I am honored to have been a part of their Love Story & have grown to love & respect this special Angel “Carole” deeply. I believe with all of my heart that Charlie was with us 4 years longer because of her love & devotion to him. I will be grateful to her for the rest of my life for what she has brought to all of us who loved Charlie.
Throughout his long battle with the brain tumor Glioblastoma Multiforme, Stage IV, Charlie has always been brave & compassionate, holding his head high no matter how bad the prognosis or pain was. Even at his weakest, he reached out to strangers with words of encouragement & strength. He was a mentor to many people & a Miracle to anyone who has heard his story, & above all, he was a man with great depth & humility. Anyone who has been fortunate enough to have Charlie touch their lives, is a better person for it. Charlie often said “There is never a bad day, everyday you are alive is a Good Day - Life is a Gift.” His spirit & courage should be an inspiration to us all.
A favorite Winston Churchill quote of Charlies’ was “Never, never, never give up”. I can attest to the fact – Charlie never, never, never gave up.
Rest in Peace Charlie.

I just read of Charlie's passing and I'm just heart-striken. I worked with Charlie at Marsh & McLennan and then as my boss at Anderson-Brunton. It was always such a pleasure to spend time with Charlie (and Carole); you just felt touched by the positive energy...renewed somehow.

In the face of adversity Charlie stood taller and worked harder and then held out his hand to every person with a handicap or a vision problem. His speeches were amazing; I don't think there was a dry eye at the event I attended. And it was very clear he wasn't there to talk about Charlie, he was there to help others; to inspire them to never give up, to "live life with passion," to never say never. He believed and he embodied those ideals.

My sympathies to Carole and the Anderson family; I hope you find solace and joy in your memories of what a wonderful person Charlie was.

Chuck, Georgia, Patti and Carole,

My saddened heart goes out to all of you and your extended family. Charlie will forever live on in our hearts and lives. He was an inspiration to everyone that had the privilege of knowing him. He touched our minds, our soul, and our hearts with his never ending strength to fight the courageous battle he fought in his life. He made the world a better place, he made a difference in many peoples lives along the way and will never be forgotten!

Charlie, my friend, my brother, I will never forget you and the good times we shared growing up together. Seems like we were inseparable at times...playing sports together or against each other, all the good times we had at Big Lake, just laughing and playing jokes on each other. They were the best of times...till we meet again my friend!

May you rest in peace,

An era, a legend, and a great friend of mine has passed. Charlie's humerous personality will not be forgotten by all those who knew him. Besides being one of Anchorage's standout tennis champions, he also made generous donations for many years to support and sponsor our tennis tournaments at the Alaska Club. Charlie Anderson was an extraordinary man who did extraordinary things. Although he only lived physically to be 53, Charlie’s enduring legacy will be the way in which he lived his life. I always respected Charlie; but never more than the last six years. He boldly faced his challenges with strength, grace, and dignity.

Charlie wanted to live because he loved life. I have never witnessed someone who was so determined to squeeze the most out of every day. Oddly, in death, Charlie is now more alive than ever. The quality of his life will live with us forever. His legacy is large and profound…and it is undying.

Chuck and Georgia, you were amazing parents to Charlie. You were always there for him. He loved and appreciated everything you did for him. No parent should ever have to watch their child suffer. However, you both propped him up with love, compassion, and laughter. Amazingly, Charlie was always so concerned about how you both were handling his illness. He was more concerned for you than himself. Charlie may have had many loves, but-- Chuck and Georgia--he could not have loved anyone any more than you. I know you have lost more than a son…you have lost your best friend.

Carole, you are an angel. Thank you for sharing your love with Charlie—and all of us. You gave Charlie such happiness. You showed us the true meaning of love. Your compassion for everyone enveloped our souls. You brought such healing and love to Charlie’s journey, and we are forever grateful.

Chas, your Father was a GREAT man! In many ways he wanted to live for you. I know you will do the same for him. Your Father was so proud to call you his son. Your father was a fierce competitor, and an exceptional athlete. However, you may not know--that even in competition--he always tried to bring people up with him. For Charlie, it was not always about winning personally. He wanted people to believe in themselves. He wanted everyone to compete at their highest levels. Please give your Mother lots of hugs, because she needs them too. All of your Father’s friends will be there for you to share our love, admiration and respect for Charlie.

I miss Charlie. He was one of the finest men I have ever known. I am certainly a better person for knowing him.

A life can be measured in the way we live, love, and the way treat others. On all accounts, Charlie was an outstanding success. Congratulations on a life well-lived. May we all be so fortunate.

Love, John Hendrickson and Marylou Whitney

I am very honored to have met them after having surgery and a diagnosis. HOPE to GOD is what they have inspired me with. Lot's of love for them both, and his son <3 <3 May you rest in peace and enjoy being in the presence of GOD!
