Daniel Walsh Obituary

Lifelong Alaskan Daniel Walsh, 85, died May 17, 2008, in his Anchorage home with family members at his side.
A funeral Mass will be at 2:30 p.m. May 29 at the Holy Family Cathedral, Fifth Avenue and H Street; a reception will be afterward. A celebration of his life will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum, 4721 Aircraft Drive.
Dan was born Sept. 16, 1922 in Nome, the seventh of 10 children of Michael Joseph and Louise Forsythe Walsh. A graduate of Nome High School Class of 1942, Dan was naturally drawn to mechanics and aviation. Employed briefly with Pan American Airways in Fairbanks, Dan was inducted into the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Philippine Liberation campaign as an aviation machinist mate. Dan earned the Victory Medal for Good Conduct and was honorably discharged in June 1946.
Returning to his beloved Alaska, Dan fell in love with Agnes Sarah Morelli, then a nurse at Providence Hospital. They married Sept. 27, 1947, and celebrated their 60th anniversary last year.
Dan was a dedicated family man and worked hard to provide for his family, retiring in 1986. Dan and Agnes moved to Anchorage in 1990.
Dan served as a Nome volunteer fireman, a member of Alaska Pioneer Igloo 1 and American Legion Post 19 and was honored for his 10 years of service on the Selective Service Board. In 1995, Dan was awarded the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award by the FAA.
"Dan's passions were family, flying and prospecting," his family recalled. "Dan was a gentle man, the best dad and grandpa anyone could ask for, a committed friend to all and a loving husband. (We) miss him dearly but know that he is at peace."
Dan and Agnes were blessed with nine children, Catherine (Fred Dyen), Teresa (Gary Cushnie), Robert (Patrice Knobbe), Joan (Peter Treleaven), John (Dawn Rider), Rosemary (Dennis Heigis), Sharon (Andrew Niemiec), Patrick (Dawn Patience) and Monica; grandchildren, Colleen Cushnie, John (Annika) Cushnie, Jennifer Dyen (Anthony Zamora), Mariah Dyen (Patrick Flanagan), Shawna Rider, Brennan Walsh (Penny Schnering), Blake Rider, Donovan Walsh, Sarah Dyen, Shannon Walsh, Kiana Dyen, Nicholas Dyen and Rielly Walsh; and great-grandchildren, Sophia Flanagan and Mario Zamora. Dan is also survived by his siblings, Eileen, Ann, Kathleen, Noreen and James.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ARC of Anchorage, 2211 Arca Drive, Anchorage 99508, or HOPE Community Resources, 540 W. International Road, Anchorage 99518.

Although I could not be in Anchorage for Dan's funeral, I want to offer my thoughts to his family. He was a very good-natured, kind person, and I will miss him.

Words cannot express the feeling of learning of the passing of Kevin, my younger brother, my last remaining brother. Kevin was a very quiet person, yet most accomodating to any person who needed help with his mechanical problems. He worked for Pan American Airlines for a time but as an airplane mechanic and a pilot's license, he was often called upon for help. He never hesitated to fix someone's car, washing machine, or appliance. Indeed, he was a remarkable person and I will miss him for ever.

I was fortunate to get to know Dan while I lived in Nome with Patrice and Bob Walsh, when they were awaiting the birth of Brennan. He was very thoughtful and always stopped by while I was house sitting to see if I needed anything.....and I will be forever grateful for his offer to empty the "honeybucket" !! I was so glad that I got to see both Dan and Agnes at Shannon's graduation back in 2005. What a great man.

Blessings and condolences to the Walsh family. I had the privilege of knowing Dan and Agnes when I lived in Nome from 1976-1989.

Dan was such a kind person, always friendly and gracious, and epitomized what it means to be a good neighbor. I am grateful to have known Dan, and the whole Walsh family.
