David Bristol Obituary

Anchorage resident David C. Bristol, 63, died of pancreatic cancer June 19, 2008, surrounded by his family at home.
A funeral will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Lutheran Church of Hope, where he and his wife have been members for 35 years.
David was born July 16, 1944, in York, Neb., to Curtis and Dora Bristol. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1968.
He moved to Anchorage in 1968 during his tour of duty in the U.S. Army, which ended in 1970.
After starting life on a farm, he spent more than two decades working in various parts of the food industry, including managing a grocery store in Nome, working for wholesale food company J. B. Gottstein during the construction of the Alaska pipeline and for most of his career he worked at Sales Corporation of Alaska. His work with food didn't stop after retirement in the 1990s. He often helped with the food pantry at his church and will be honored for his volunteerism on a new mural for the Food Bank of Alaska.
His family remembers David's "generosity of time, organizational abilities and strong feeling that people give back to their community through volunteerism. He loved his family and friends and he made them a priority in his life. Whether it was donating blood or helping to put up a neighbor's chain-link fence, he often showed up without even being asked."
Throughout his life David frequently volunteered at his church, the food bank, the Alaska Center for the Blind, and the Blood Bank of Alaska, where he was recognized as a "hero donor." He also spent many years volunteering as a coach for soccer and basketball.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Bristol; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Emmily Bristol of Las Vegas and James and Amy Bristol of Anchorage; father and stepmother, Curtis and Edith Bristol of York; and brother and sister-in-law, Gale and Sharon Bristol of York.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Food Bank of Alaska or Lutheran Church of Hope's building fund.
Arrangements are with Witzleben Legacy Funeral Home

I have been close friends with Emmily and Mike for almost 15 years. During that time I never had the honor of meeting Dave but I know how powerful his love, guidance, and positive example of how to live your life impacted his son Mike and his wife Emmily. Just wanted you to know that he has touched many lives, even ones he never met.

My condolences.

David and I are "distant" cousins and former high school classmates at Waco High School in Nebraska. I have fond memories of active discussions and debates over topics of the time (1958 - 1962) in our many classes together.

May memories of his dedication to his family and community sustain you in your grief.
