Deirdre Eitel Obituary

Deirdre "Dede" Eitel, loving mother, wife, daughter, sister and dear friend, died unexpectedly Oct. 31, 2008, near Bozeman, Mont. Dede loved running along mountain trails, her dog at her side. There she now rests, cradled by the mountains she loved so dearly.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Montana State University Fieldhouse. The public is invited to jot down a favorite story or memory and bring copies of favorite photos to put on display. Online broadcast of the service will be at www.eventbywire.com/viewevent/?id=886-211. In Alaska, begin viewing at 1 p.m.
Dede was born in Anchorage to Marvin and Kathleen Hathhorn in the middle of a snowstorm on April 15, 1963, the fourth of five children. The caul covering her face at birth was perhaps a portent of the beautiful human being that was to emerge and fill the hearts of so many.
Dede grew up first in Girdwood, then Anchorage, where she developed a profound love of the outdoors, cross-country skiing and running, and an inquisitive desire to truly know the world around her. She was a dedicated student and athlete, outpacing others both in the classroom and on the field. She graduated near the top of her class in 1981 with two first places in the Alaska High School Cross-Country Championships and was winner of the Anchorage Mayor's Marathon.
At the end of her high school years, Dede earned a scholarship to run with the University of Montana cross-country team and placed fifth in the AIAW Division I Intercollegiate 1981 Championships. She was the first American to cross the finish line and was later named to the University of Montana Athletic Hall of Fame. She continued running and skiing throughout the rest of her life, winning the John Coulter Run, the Governor's Cup and the Sweet Pea, among many other local races.
Dede's winning ways were not reserved only for athletic endeavors; the same determination to push herself beyond natural limits is evidenced by the loving attention she gave to her family, her community and her work. Throughout her career as a photo journalist, first as intern for the Salt Lake Tribune and later chief photographer for the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, Dede's photos brought to life the stories of many, ranging from those living on the streets of Bozeman to dignitaries in Islamabad, Pakistan.
While working on her photojournalism portfolio at Western Kentucky University, Dede became the 48th annual College Photographer of the Year for her photo story on the Amish. The awards she earned from the Montana Newspaper Association and the Pacific Northwest Excellence in Journalism competition are too numerous to print. Most recently she traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan as photographer for the Central Asia Institute, to which she devoted endless hours taking pictures and writing text that was "just right."
Though driven as a professional photographer and athlete, most dear to her were her husband, Tom Eitel, for whom she held a deep, intense love; her children, Morgan and Pipi, upon whom she showered endless care and attention; her brothers and sisters, Michael Hathhorn (Laura), Kristin Hathhorn (Mark Battaion), Siobhan Hathhorn (John Hines) and Joel Hathhorn (deceased); her parents, Marvin and Kathleen Hathhorn; and her many close friends and colleagues.
We will miss Dede's ability to see the world from a different angle, to make us laugh with a quick-witted comment at just the right moment, her loving and gentle attention to detail, and her thoughtful, sensitive nature.
In lieu of flowers, Dede's family would appreciate donations to The Morgan and Pipi Eitel Scholarship Fund, First Security Bank, 208 E. Main St., Bozeman MT 59715, 585-3800.

Tom:
I met Dede when she first arrived in Montana when she and Za showed up on touring bikes at the St Mary's Ranger Station in Glacier Park before fall training camp (I think they were 17 years old at the time! I was amazed at their adventurous spirit.) I was lucky enough to share a season of cross country with her in Missoula. She was a true character, and I can only imagine what a great woman she turned out to be - you must have many wonderful memories. I am terribly sorry for your loss. My sincere regards.

Dear Coach Tom,

I was saddened to hear about Diedre. I remember her taking photos of me during track and outside of track. She truly knew her photography... I also had the opportunity to run with her in at least one Bozeman race. She always had the biggest smile on her face. You and the little ones will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Tom, Morgan, Pipi and the Hathhorn family,
I am so sorry for your loss. As a younger Dimond High runner I looked up to Joel’s big sister in Awe; she was the star. Since her death I’ve learned about her life as a photographer and have viewed some of her fantastic work. I was so impressed and saddened at the same time.

Dear Tom, Morgan, and Pipi
Just got word via E-mail this morning. We are very sorry for yours, and our loss. She will be missed. We always enjoyed your company when our busy lives were fortunate enough to allow for a down home social. Donna lost her brother Robert to a bicycle accident in Missoula this Summer. We are always available for you. Never hesitate to call or stop by anytime.
Great regards:

My prayers go out to Deirdre's family. Deirdre will be missed by everyone whom she touched over the years. Everyone she worked with at the Chronicle, and everyone she captured behind the glass. I judged a photojournalism contest with her once. The great thing was that our newspapers were competitors. I was new to the biz and she called me up out of the blue to invite me to join the judging team of fellow colleagues and competitors. It was a really great experience and I was grateful for the gesture by which no means was necessary. She struck me as a very kind person. Anyway, I've always admired her pictures and her will to go to Afghanistan and Pakistan following her passion of photojournalism for change. Montana photojournalists will always remember her. My condolences also go out to the Chronicle photo staff. It must be difficult continuing to work these past few days. But I guess that's what she would have wanted you to do right. Make deadline.

I am so sorry for the lost of your dear loved one. It's comforting to know that God cares for all of us and losing a loved one is something we cannot get used to. The Bible gives us hope that one day we can see our dear loved one again. On behalf of all mankind Jesus surrender his soul for many. John 15:13 says “No one has love greater than this, that someone should surrender his soul on behalf of his friends.” Truly I am sorry to hear of the loss of your dear loved one and I hope these few words will bring you comfort and hope.

Tom, Morgan and Pipi,

One of the greatest gifts we have here on this earth is our memory. We can at any given moment close our eyes and see our loved one. No one else will have the exact memory so that makes them each special and personal. I know each of you have countless memories to treasure. God allows us to take these memories with us when we return to be with him, so know that Dede has those of you three with her now. I know she treasures them also. Please find comfort in the wonderful memories and be thankful you got to make them with such a beautiful person that Dede was. Thank you for sharing her with us. We love you all and are truly better people for being allowed to have been a part of yours and Dede's life. God bless!!!

Dede:
a resounding memory in the hearts of a core group of skiiers/runners
from many schools in the Anchorage area during our growing up. She
represented the adventurous spirit bred from the beauty of the land of
Alaska- this we thankfully had the oportunity to share with her. The
outdoors, was the catalyst from which deep friendships were formed.

Dede, you were such an incredibly beautiful, talented, fun and loving person. I feel truly blessed to have been friends with you and so many of your beloved family and friends. My heart and tears go out to Tom, Morgan, Pippi, Siobhan & John, and Krissy & Mark, who directly touched my life; to your Mom and Dad who have endured more than their share of pain; to the rest of your family whom I've not yet met; and to all the friends we shared. I have the happiest memories of long runs along the Clark Fork and up the Rattlesnake and Pattee Canyon with Dede in Missoula more than 20 years ago. Once, during a 10K race around downtown, I caught up to her with about a mile to go. I mentioned that the next woman was only 50 yards behind, and Dede barked "So stop talking and start running!" We put it into overdrive and reeled in one man after another. Dede crossed the finish line in the top 20 overall and more than a minute ahead of the second-place woman. Then she hit me on the shoulder, hard. She said, "I didn't mean we had to sprint the whole last mile." Then she let loose that big, hearty laugh and scooted off looking for Tom, with a bounce in her legs and turning heads as she went. That's how I'll always remember her.

Deirdre and I were classmates at WKU. She was passionate about her photography and about Tom whom she spoke of often and missed during the time she was in Kentucky. I was on her wedding photo site in the past two weeks and was going to send a note how nice her work is. But, unfortunately, I was busy at work and did not take the time. I wish I had because she was heavy on my mind during that time. She is a lovely person and will be missed. Her family, whom I never met, and her co-workers are in my thoughts.
