Dominick Torrago Obituary

Alaska Pioneer, Dominick Torrago, 91, passed away February 13. He was born May 16, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY and was the eldest son of five children of Italian immigrants.

Dominick served as a radio operator gunner for US Army Air Force during WWII.

After his military service, he met a friend who said he had a map that showed where gold was in Alaska so, in 1946 against his father's wishes, he and two friends drove a Buick Roadmaster, from Brooklyn to Seattle, sailed on a steamship to Juneau and then flew to Anchorage. When the gold mining didn't pan out, he bought a chicken farm in Spenard, then worked for JB Gottstein and finally worked his way up through the ranks of the Municipality of Anchorage, where he retired as a Right-of-Way Agent.

Dominick was married to Marge (Janis) for 63 years and they had two daughters. Before they met, they worked at competing grocery stores. A friend introduced them and they were married June 18, 1950 at Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage.

He liked showing off his grandchildren to his friends at the Alaska Club and was a regular fixture there into his late 80s, famous for being the only person to use the belted vibrating weight loss machine. He loved his daughters and showed it through his many acts of kindness like when it snowed, he would go to their workplace and brush the snow off their cars.

He is survived by his wife, Marge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Vern Hohloch and Joan and Dean Karcz; grandchildren, Leo, Jack, Lily and Hannah. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Torrago.

A mass will be held Friday, February 21 at 1 p.m. at Holy Cross Parish located at 2627 Lore Road.

I'm traveling Outside right now and my sister wrote to remind me that your parents were/are my godparents. My mom used to tell stories that he would call me his 'pizza baby'. My parents were Bob and Cathy Belgard. Please give our best to your mother. I'm so sorry that I won't be at his service to be able to meet you. Take the best of care...I'm honored to know his complete story.

We're so sorry for your loss. My parents always had wonderful stories about both of your folks, from early Anchorage & later during your dad's years at Gottsteins. Take the best of care and know that you are in our thoughts.

I had the opportunity to work with Dom one summer at the Pay-N-Takit with Don Mellish, and another time after High School; his humor and work ethic influenced me for the rest of my working career. My condolences to Marge.

Blessed to have know Dominick. He was a world traveler and world class act too. I loved to hear him talk about the 1964 earthquake and life in the early days of Anchorage! He will be missed, but his spirit will live on in those he knew and loved.

I have such fond memories of your dad. We worked together at the Anchorage Water Utility in the 1960's. You were so lucky to have a father who so cherished his family.
