Duane Triplett Obituary

Longtime Anchorage resident Duane L. Triplett, 65, died Jan. 7, 2009, following a fire at his home.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cornerstone Church of God, 10431 Brayton Drive, near the corner of O'Malley Road and New Seward Highway. After the service, a reception with refreshments will be held at the chapel.
Duane L. Triplett, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, was born March 12, 1944, to Dale W. Triplett and Verla Triplett Bogue in Redding, Calif. Upon graduation from Armijo High School in Fairfield, Calif., he drove a pickup, as part of a convoy of family vehicles, to Alaska in 1961.
Duane worked as a chainsaw operator, felling trees at the corner of Dimond Boulevard and Old Seward Highway, and as a car jockey for Alaska Sales & Service at Third Avenue and E Street.
He left Alaska to return to California to be near his high school sweetheart, Colleen, who was in college working toward her teacher's degree. He joined the Army Reserves while there and served for six years. Upon Colleen's graduation from college, they were married and left California for Alaska to seek their fortune.
Duane's salesmanship was recognized while managing the camera department at Safeway Super S drugstore at Ninth Avenue and Gambell Street. He later accepted a position with KTVA television as an account executive, later moving on to KTUU television and subsequently to KHAR television, now known as KIMO TV. After setting several sales records as account executive, he was promoted to sales manager, general sales manager and eventually to president of KIMO TV. He expanded the company to become Alaska Television Network, the first and only statewide television network, adding stations in Fairbanks and Juneau.
He was befriended by mayors, governors and business owners alike. His business advice and expertise were sought by many in the business and political world.
After retiring from the television industry, he continued to help others as a business consultant and arbitration mediator.
He always had time for his friends and family in whatever capacity he could help. He was passionate about loyalty, honesty and compassion toward his fellow man. He remained loyal to his humble origins as a down-to-earth people person. He never met a stranger.
Duane is survived by his bride of 43 years, Colleen; his daughter, Jenifer; son, Travis; son-in-law, Eugene; daughter-in-law, Sara; brother, Kenneth; stepbrothers, Richard and Larry Bogue; aunt, Phyllis Caffrey; uncle, Veron Robinson; cousins, Tina, Linda, Holly and John Krause; nieces, Christina and Melissa; and nephews, Matthew and Timothy. Duane derived extreme pleasure from his grandchildren: Maryah, Naomi, Alli, Robert, Wyatt, Gavin, Jessiann and Payton.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother and stepfather, Ray E. Bogue.
Contributions to the family may be made at any branch of Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, account No. 1438281.

Duane promoted my earliest Alaska image, 'Anchorage Sunset', (made from across the Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet,) as the station logo for the McNeil-Lehrer News Hour' in the spring of 1983, He would go on to use other images to promote me. Both the money he paid me, and the incredible exposure he provided me, was invaluable to the establishment of my business and life in Alaska. He proudly boasted, "I want to be able to say, 'I am the first person to sponsor you in Alaska.'" He was, and I've never stopped thinking of this, and being grateful. He was a good friend to me from our first meeting...and at a time when I had few of them. I read that he is described as 'A man who never met a stranger.' My experience attests to this truth. I honor his memory with great sorrow. I'm attaching the image that he, first, promoted. Unfortunately, this site is antiquated and does not allow TIF files, only jpegs.

"Mr. Triplett" was my basketball coach in about the years 1982 to 1984: 13 years old on. He made it fun at a time when that's all it should have been. I hadn't seen Duane in the years since, but was very sorry to hear of his loss to the family and community at large. I lost both of my parents in 2002 under tragic circumstances. The entire family has my knowing condolences for what it is you are going through. For what it is worth: It does get better in time, try to remember that each day to get you to the next. My thoughts are with you all.

I was a guest at Duane and Colleen's wedding, and through the years, knew that he provided a happy life for his family, friends and co-workers. He devoted half of his last year to makingf life as comfortable and stress-free as possible for his mother-in-law, Pat Gross, now 97. May he be blessed in return. God bless his family.

Colleen and family:

So sorry to learn of Duane's passing. I last worked with him at KIMO, but my fondest memories of Duane will always be his time at KTVA and doing "The Buckaroos" show. Duane will be missed and will always be my Buckaroo buddy.

Love and God bless

Duane was an incredible influence on me personally and professionally. He was always there when he was needed. If it wasn't for him I would not have had the opportunity to do what I am doing today which is helping others with all their advertising needs through my own company. The world was a better place with him in it and my blessings go out to all his family.

I would not be where I am today in my career if were not for Duane's teaching, mentoring, support, as well as his belief in me. His loyalty and support of those he loved, cared for, admired, and respected will never be forgotten. We will all miss this "Gentle Giant."
