Dylan Fuhs Obituary

Dylan David Fuhs, age 25, entered into eternal peace on June 5, 2017, at his home in Anchorage, Alaska. A substance abuse related accident, Dylan's long-term battle with addiction ultimately took his life.
Born on May 1, 1992, Dylan brought a light to his family that even his death cannot extinguish. With dazzling blue eyes and mischievous spirit, Dylan cultivated a sense of humor, that coupled with his unsurpassed kindness, leaves the biggest hole in our hearts. A natural athlete, he followed in the footsteps of other family members, who inspired his passion for martial arts and boxing. His childhood was filled with little league, hockey, water sports, music and incredible outdoor adventures guided by his parents. Shrimping, fishing and exploring further captivated the essence of his childhood.
Dylan was always there for anyone in need. At the drop of a hat, he was available to comfort, serve and protect. He brought justice for the underdog and stood up for those who were undermined. He also loved a good brawl! Dylan had a gift of making people feel important, dispensing warm hugs with an amazing smile and genuine spirit; loyalty was his code. In reflection, his closest friends have said, "He loved hard and had a keen awareness."
Nothing in the world meant more to Dylan than family. He was so inspired by the wisdom and experience of the elderly, for whom he showed great respect and compassion. He spent time listening to their stories and connecting with their heritage, particularly his grandparents. His inquisitiveness for his own lineage and history fascinated his family as he reinforced the importance with us all the importance of belonging.
To say that he will be missed is an understatement. He is a piece of our puzzle that is gone and we will never be the same. He leaves behind his mother, Karen Malcolm-Smith, whose sun rose and set with Dylan; her husband and Dylan's father, Troy Smith; his sisters, Jennifer and Stephanie Smith; Kori Mateaki and husband Jimmy; and his grandmother, Helen Fuhs; his aunts and uncles, Cathy Malcolm-Byars, Roger and Stacy Malcolm and Jane and Jimmy Dubbins; cousins, Jessie Malcolm-Carlson, Luke Malcolm, Janelle Sousa and Justine Hultquist; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved Rottweiler, Nas. Dylan will not only be missed by friends in Anchorage, but in Scottsdale, Ariz., as well. He is preceded in death by his paternal father, David Fuhs; grandparents, William and Frances Malcolm; grandfather, Marvin Fuhs; and best friend and cousin, Matthew Byars.
Services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral, 3900 Wisconsin Street in Anchorage, on Friday, June 16, 2017. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., followed by Mass at 3 p.m. conducted by Father Andy. A eulogy will follow at 4 p.m.
We hope in sharing Dylan's story that we reduce and eliminate the stigma surrounding drug addiction, shed light on this national epidemic and possibly help save another family from feeling the incredible emptiness and loss that we will feel forever. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Narcotic Drug Treatment Center of Anchorage or Serenity House in Soldotna, Alaska.

*I am so sorry for your loss. I love you. Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe. You have to believe that Dylan was here for a reason and your connection could never be broken.I will always be here for you Karen day or night.. that will never change.

Karen, Troy, Roger, Stacy, Cathy and the entire family, my heart breaks with your over the tragic loss of Dylan. Trusting that today will be filled with moments of tender, warm, honoring, funny, memories that you can draw on in the future, when needing some "Dylan time", without the raw grief that overshadows now. Praying for peace that passes the understanding of current circumstance, and the Fathers' love to surround you, comfort you, and hold you up today. Love you.

I'm going to miss you so much Dylan. I know you'll always be with us but now we'll have to figure out that new relationship. I miss your laughter, I miss your wit and making me laugh, I miss the casual way you sat beside me and let me reminisce and you telling me new stories. I loved the way I could text and ask for honey-dos and you'd make time to come do them. I miss lectures on eating properly and hearing about your working out regime. Mostly I miss knowing I'll see you again. I miss you. You're with God now and onto new adventures and you'll be learning so much. But always give us signs so we know you're close. I pray for peace in Karen and Troy's heart. I love you both.
