Long time Anchorage, Alaska, resident Mr. Alfred "Fred" Otto Kehl, 90, died on Monday, March 21, 2016, in Kasilof, Alaska. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at his daughter Tammy Weste's home in Kasilof. The American Legion Post #20 and The V.F.W. Post #10046 will be officiating the service and performing Military Honors. Please contact Tammy for directions or questions: 398-8094. Mr. Kehl was born on Feb. 3, 1926, in Glencoe, Ill. Before coming to Alaska, he enlisted twice in the U.S. Army, where he served in WWII in Europe for the 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division. He grew up in Waukegan, Ill., where he learned his love of ground keeping from his father and his love of trains, where he befriended conductors and hobos at the local train yard. He came to Alaska in 1954, where he met his wife, Dorothy Goodmonson, in Anchorage and they married in 1958. He worked for Sea Land and Angelus Memorial Park when he first moved to Anchorage. They homesteaded at Goose Bay, Alaska, until moving back to Anchorage. After the 1964 Earthquake, they opened Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary where they served the State of Alaska for more than 40 years. He learned about grief counseling in the 1970's, which would become his passion until the end where he served for the Lost and Found grief group and counseling services statewide. He was a member of the International Rotary Club and served for more than 30 years and was President for one year. He also had too many awards to mention. He loved to golf and achieved two holes-in-one. Fred was a member of the Gloria Di Lutheran Church in Anchorage. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto Kehl and Theresa Kusch; and brother, Frederick Kehl. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kehl of Kasilof; sons, Fred Kehl of Waukegan, Ill., and Kim Kehl of Deerfield, Ill.; daughter, Tammy Weste of Kasilof; grandson, Jason McKay of Annapolis, Md.; and granddaughter, Tiffany Jensen of Green Bay, Wis.; three great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. I met Mr. Kehl through a grief group he supported. I lost my husband and Mr. Kehl helped guide me through. I will always be thankful for his help to get me through those days. Some years later I was with my boys on Mother's day at Bradley House and Mr. & Mrs. Kehl were there, on their way out Mr. Kehl stopped by to say a kind word to my boys. On other visits to Bradley House if Mr Kehl was there we would always see him stop on his way out to say a kind word to someone. What a wonderful man! He helped so many people on his journey.
May God Bless Him and thank you for sharing your Husband, Dad,Grandpa... with others. He made a difference.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Fred. We had the pleasure of spending many Sunday's having brunch with Fred & Dot at the Bradley House where we came to know and appreciate them both. Fred was a walking history lesson on World War 2, Anchorage and Alaska. Fred was one of the kindest most generous people I've ever met and feel honored to have known him. Fred did so much for so many and was involved in numerous public service organizations including the Rotary. My deepest sympathies go to Dot & the family. May he rest in peace.

Was so sorry to hear of Fred's passing. Just last week I thought about Fred and was going to contact him in Kasilof. Fred was a dedicated and avid supporter of the Retired Military Golf Association (RMGA) at Elagleglen and Moose Run Golf Courses. As a result of this he was made an "Honorary Member" of the RMGA. His camaraderie and "jokes" has been missed these past few years.
God Bless his family in this time of Sadness!

I am so sorry to hear of Fred's passing. He, through the Lost and Found grief group, was a lifesaver, a guide to healing, and a truly compassionate human being. Without his kindness and outreach, many who have lost loved ones would not have learned how to cope. I will always be grateful to Fred for helping me through the toughest time in my life. I hope that by saying this, his family can feel some comfort in knowing what a good man Fred was. Thank you Fred. Peace. Nancy

Dorothy & Tammy,
Had been informed of Fred's passing last month and know that my thoughts and prayers are with the family. Fred lived a full, varied and exciting 90 years and always had stories to tell. He was a true pioneer in many areas of funeral service. Will be thinking of you as you have your memorial.
