Gene Cox Obituary

Gene D. Cox, 64, passed away on Jan. 20, 2018, in Anchorage, Alaska.
Gene was born in Kansas and spent his teenage years in Reno, Nev. As a young man, Gene traveled to Alaska and fell in love with the state. He lived in Fairbanks until 1992, when he moved to Anchorage.
He met his wife of 25 years, Dulce Nobre, in Alaska and they were married on the sandy beaches of Jamaica. They made their home in Anchorage.
Gene retired in 2015 from the Alaska Department of Transportation, where he started in the late 1970s as a surveyor and worked for many years as a Lead Grade Inspector.
He worked on some of Alaska's most ambitious road and bridge construction projects, including the Whittier Tunnel and others throughout Southcentral and the Interior. He had a unique ability to communicate with and willingness to mentor co-workers and left a lasting professional legacy.
Gene was an avid traveler. He traveled throughout the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
He never met a stranger and was well loved by many. He had a gentle and strong sense of humor. He and his trusty dogs had many adventures in Alaska's wild spaces.
Gene was preceded in death by his father, Lester Cox; mother, Myra Hollingsworth; and brother, Danny Cox. Gene is survived by his wife, Dulce Nobre; brother, Stacy Cox of Altoona, Kan.; sister, Michealle Vanderpool of Atlanta, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.
Gene's favorite charity was Doctors Without Borders. In lieu of flowers, donations to Doctors Without Borders or Providence Hospice in Gene's name would be appreciated. Words of comfort can be shared with the family at www.legacyalaska.com.
Heartfelt thanks go to Providence Hospice and Hospital staff for their kind service.
Family and friends will gather at a later date to scatter Gene's ashes and to celebrate his life.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Gene's passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to Gene's family and his beloved wife Dulce.

I will always be grateful to have known Gene and of our time together. I think of Gene every time I see roadwork taking place. I was very lucky to have had Gene as a Mentor while we worked together at DOT. I will miss his great story telling and laughter the most. RIP Gene ...

I refuse to believe Geno is gone. Way too much life force there to just vanish. "Over the mountains and over the plains, into the muskeg and into the rain....." It was a grand time moving mountains and cars with you big guy. Cut and fill well in the land of eternally good material. And a note to family, the hole a guy like Geno leaves can only be filled with the memories and happy thoughts a guy like Geno brings to the party. If it is possible, please contact me at [email protected] for info on future Geno events, there are still words to say. Peace.

Dulce, Barbara and I are so sorry for your loss. I have great memories of Gene that I will never forget. From working on various construction projects in the interior of ALASKA to some crazy travels in the Caribbean. That great meal the four of us had in Girdwood at the Double Musky Inn stands out as a very special evening for Barbara and I. RIP Geno....

I just learned of Gene's passing. I met Gene in 1978 as we were hired on the same Dot survey crew in Fairbanks. Although I hadn't seen him for some time, we would occasionally talk on the phone and relive some of our escapades. When ever I thought about Gene Cox..........a smile and a chuckle always followed. Thanks for the good times Gene......you will be missed.

Road-construction is a tough business and hard work. I worked with Geno on the haul road to the North Slope and again in Central Region D.O.T.

His unique perspective, charismatic and fun-loving personality, always made a job more lively and fun.

He leaves us with an auspicious legacy -- as a bright star on a moonless night, he will not be forgotten.

My sincere condolences to his loved ones and especially his wondrous love, Dulce.
