George Oliver Obituary

"Fists in the wind, sun at your back, a tank that never runs dry and a smooth, curvy road that never ends!" - Wendell
George James "Jim" Oliver passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at home in Anchorage, Alaska, due to heart failure during the morning of Sept. 15, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be held at the American Legion, located on the New Seward frontage road between 68th and 72nd Avenues, on Sept. 29, 2017, at 3 p.m. Interment will be held at a future date at the Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane, Wash.
Jim was born in Vicenza, Italy, where his father was stationed with the U.S. Army. His family moved extensively during his early years, but his roots were firmly established in Anchorage, where his father's final assignment ended here in the summer of 1971. Jim graduated from Bartlett High School in 1976. His first high school job turned into a 10-year career at the 9th and Gambell Pay and Save department store as the electronics department manager. Several sales jobs then led him to Tenneco Automotive, as a manufacturer's representative for NAPA Auto Parts. In 2002, he began as a representative at Napa Auto Parts. His job of outside sales required traveling throughout the state and frequently outside the state, and he was very proud of it. In 2017, he became the sales representative for the 5th Avenue store. He was always willing to help anyone in need and blessed people with his knowledge.
Jim began dating Rita Leann Johnson, a transplanted Texan and friend of his extended family, and the two were married here in 1990. Rita Leann is a long-time employee of the USPS. Jim and Rita Leann enjoyed traveling, particularly throughout Italy, fishing, camping and enjoyed friends and family. Jim took every opportunity to ride his Harley-Davidson. He was always the life of the party, never knew a stranger and was loved everywhere he went. His witty sense of humor and penchant to playfully engage with wait staff kept everyone in stitches. He had the biggest heart and was larger than life, and once you met him, you were family.
Jim is survived by his wife, Rita Leann; they were married 27 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel George S. Oliver and his wife Velma Joyce; cousin, Mike Irwin. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lawanda Bliss; his siblings, Carolyn and Mike Uecker, Marilyn and Wendell Smith and Donald "Skip," Lori and Abby Oliver; his cousins, Bud Irwin, and Rick and Debbie Irwin and Lisa and family, Tina and family, Misty, Richard, Ryan Irwin, Mindy and Mike Mellor, William 'Bill' Oliver and his children and Kathy Powell; his brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Susie Johnson, Sam and Michelle Johnson and sons Wyatt and Dane, Scott Johnson and son Camden, Kim Johnson and Brian Fencl and daughters Jaylyn and Rigley, Gary and Ruthie Johnson and children; and numerous cousins in Spokane. He is also survived by Alaska family: Steve and Marti Delimont and their children; niece, Madison; niece, Stephanie and Shawn, Shawnie, Trenton, Aubrey and nephew Tyler; Mike and Barb Wagner Daughter Jessica, Virgil and Mary Davis, Derrick Anderson, Eddie Athey and many others.

Man where to begin? I met Jim when I was still going to Bartlett and I think he had just graduated. For a good year, until I moved to Arizona to go to college we did almost everything together. We were both into CB radio back then and we logged many miles in his 69 Chevelle. When I left we didn't write or stay in touch too much. I did go to a big family in Spokane in 78 or maybe it was 79 and that was a blast. In the mid 80's I went to Anchorage for a visit and walked into Pay N Save and he just looked up and it was like we had seen each other yesterday. He asked how long I was there for and I asked when he got off work. He said it would be about 4 hours and just tossed me the keys to the Chevelle and said be back then. That was kinda what I figured would happen again some day I'd just walk in and we would pick right back up where we left off.

On his 50th birthday I called his parents to get his phone number. Caught him at La Mex and had a quick conversation. Since then I'd emailed a few times and we texted a bit. I last had texted with him in August when a friend of mine had seen a 69 Chevelle in the same color as Jim's old one. I sent that picture on to Jim who sent me back a great one of him laying on the hood of the car.

I had texted a Happy Thanksgiving message to Jim and of course got no reply. But didn't think much about that. So for Christmas I had sent another and Leann relayed the bad news. Man I'm so angry with myself for not making the time to get together sooner. Don't let this happen to you and any close friends. Find the time and make the effort. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

I really hope to meet you some day Leann. Let's not let time run out on us on this. I'm sure I probably have a story or two about him that no one else knows. I'd love to share them.

My address says Phoenix but I am living on the beach in Puerto Penasco Mexico so anytime you want to get away for a bit we can pick you up at the Phoenix airport and bring you on down.

Jim to you I say that the place you are in now is better with you there and the place you left behind will never be the same with you gone. Happy trails!

I am sorry for finding out about this so late. I have known Jim since junior high school, we lived 3 doors apart on Ft. Richardson, must have been 1973 or '74. I still recall the weekend, near Christmas, when we got together to put headers on his Chevelle. He was recovering from a shoulder injury, but he could not wait to put the headers on. A group of us got together that winter weekend, jacked up his car in the garage and put them on for him... I know he would have done the same for anyone else. I will always remember Jim's smile and handshake.

Ride on Jim - We will all follow, in our time.

Jim was a great friend when we worked at Pay n Save. There were so many Jim's there that I was Jimmy. Jim was always super nice and funny. Even after I left and he moved on to Napa, every time we ran into each other, it was like old times, he was special and I am very sorry to hear of his passing.

Leanne, Jim's heart didn't give out, he just gave too much of it away. He just loved too much, but most of all he loved you and his family. Hours of tales, jimisms, of the past, present and future plans. He was a great mentor, protector and story teller. I will always treasure our time together and hearing the stories of his life

So sad to read about Jim's passing. The whole Oliver clan led by Joyce and George were a delight. And yes, Jim was the "life of any Party." Paulette and Charlie Hostetler (neighbors of Joyce and George)
