Gladys Gomez Obituary

Former Alaska resident, Gladys Louise (Mitchell) Gomez, 75, succumbed to a lengthy illness on November 13th, 2012, in Horn Lake, Mississippi with her family at her side.

She was born October 5th, 1937 in Blytheville, AR., the daughter of Ernest and Bertha Mitchell.

In 1961, she married Fred Gomez. In 1963 they were stationed at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. She accompanied Fred throughout his military career but always considered Alaska her home. In 1980 the Gomez family returned to settle in Anchorage permanently. She was employed many years at the Kenai dining facilities, Elmendorf AFB, and a lifelong member of the VFW. Due to health reasons, Gladys relocated to Knoxville, TN in 2009.

Gladys was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed life's simple pleasures of family and friends. Despite the challenges life threw in her path, she brought us joy, made us laugh, and gave us hundreds of sweet memories that will live in our hearts forever.

She is survived by her sister Katherine Courtney, Herald, CA; daughters, Ina Lane and her husband Otis, Seymour, TN, Gena O'Connor and her husband Lyle, Anchorage, AK, Dottie Flanigan and Mac, Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Carolyn Kuhl and her husband Tom, Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Latisha Garcia and her husband Daniel, Horn Lake, MS. Grandchildren: Kim, Shannon, Matt, Nicholas, Bethany and her husband Kyle, Justyn, Brett and Angel, Alexander, Ryan, Amanda, Kaitlin, Jessica and Mike, Jacklyn, Jennifer, Zacheriah, Dyamond, Katie, Michaela, Santiago, Elijah, Joshua and Tabitha, Brandon and his wife Phyllis, Breanna, Cierra, Hailey and Daniel. Great-grandchildren: Kelsey, Destiny, Dalton, Kaydence, Cheyenne, Noah, Nathan, Tia, Tae, Tre, Gavin, Greyson, Skyler, Elijah, Adrianna, Juleah and niece Sue Martin.

She was preceded in death by both parents; her infant daughter Francis Elaine, and infant great granddaughters, Kasydi Soltis and Ava Troup.

At her request a private cremation was held followed by her return to Alaska. Gladys was adored by all that knew her and will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. A celebration of life will be this coming spring (TBA).

Donations can be made in her memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Grandma Gomez and I were like oil and water, she knew I always loved her and always cared just as I knew she did. There are so many memories I have of her all the way back to being a young child in Germany. She was always apart of my life and loved all of her grandkids and children with all of her heart. I remember that she was always on top of making sure that all of her grandkids of a birthday card and even a little Valentines on all the holidays that you wouldnt think counted, she made sure they did. I know each time I see her name, picture or think of her my heart starts to skip a beat and I tear up, but I know it will heal in time and then i'll be able to smile and laugh at the memories we had together. Gavin, Greysen and I love you and miss you!!!

When i meet this woman my heart and soul changed, for the better. She taught me things my maternal mother never could. I loved her from the first smart remark that came out of her mouth. A hole is left in my heart that will be filled one day when i see her sweet face again. She brought something even more special to me she brought 5 amazing women into my life that i now consider to be my sisters. I will love each and everyone of these ladies for what you have done for mom she was truly wonderful person and i see different traits of hers in each of you. Thanks for me my addopted mom I will love you forever and a day.
