Gregory Kellogg Obituary

Gregory L. Kellogg, 59, died at home March 5, 2011, of esophageal cancer and acute leukemia.

Born May 8, 1951, in Las Vegas, Nev., Gregory graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a degree in political science and began a 36-year career with the Environmental Protection Agency.

Gregory married in 1975 and he and his wife settled on Bainbridge Island, Wash. He developed a love for sailing, enjoying many hours exploring Puget Sound on his boat, Hejira. He served as a personnel management specialist and later as the human resources officer for EPA in Seattle.

Gregory's passion for the environment led him into program work. Over the next several years he served in a variety of positions. While he was on detail as the acting director of the Alaska Operations Office, the Exxon Valdez oil spill happened. He remained to manage EPA's response to the spill.

His love for Alaska remained strong after his return to Seattle. In 1993, he and his son Keagan embarked on a six-week "Alaska or Bust" trip, camping and fishing their way through Canada and Alaska. They received certificates of membership in the Arctic Ocean Toe-Dippers Club.

In 1995, Gregory and his family moved to Anchorage, where he served as deputy director of the Alaska Operations Office. EPA awarded him a bronze medal for commendable service in 2009.

Passionate about soccer, Gregory was coach to the Goldstriker '85 Boys, whom he led to several State Cup championships and to regionals in New Mexico, Utah and California.

Gregory loved his weekly lunches with his daughter, Kira, and granddaughters, Jaidan and Morgan, who will always remember him as Pop-Pop. He loved talking science and politics with his son Keagan and cars with his son Gage, and spending time with his dogs, Moto and Dexter.

Gregory leaves behind his wife, Kathleen; daughter and son-in-law, Kira and David Brodie; granddaughters, Jaidan Davi and Morgan Brodie; sons, Keagan and Gage of Anchorage; mother, Bobbye; brothers, Gary, Darin and Chuck and their families; and niece, Stacey McNary of Las Vegas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Kellogg, and sister, Gayla McNary.

Greg was a wonderful person to work with and did so much for the State of Alaska to develop collaboration. He led diverse groups with grace and had the ability to let everyone's voice be heard -even under challenging circumstances. He will be sadly missed! I wish you all the happiest of memories of a great guy!

Dear Kathy and Family...Bob and I were deeply sadden to learn the news of Greg's passing. I truly enjoyed working with Greg over the years at EPA, and am grateful to have had the joy and privilege of knowing all of you when you lived in Kitsap Co. May the great memories of life with Greg give you and yours peace, as his spirit will live on in our hearts.

My deepest condolences to Greg's family. He spoke of them often and loved them dearly, particularly his children and grandchildren. Greg leaves a huge void among those of us who worked with him over the years. He was a mentor and a friend, and we miss him.
