Harold Galliett Obituary

Former Anchorage resident Harold Howard Galliett, Jr. passed away in Sacramento, California on July 13 after a short illness from complications due to surgery. He was born to Harold H. Galliett, Sr. and Marie Antoinette Ligarde in Laredo Texas. Harold grew up all over the Western US as the son of an Army officer. In WWII he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served as a navigator partly with the Long Rangers - a B-24 Liberator bomber group which flew dangerous, long-range missions over the South Pacific. After the war he married Mary Sylvia Johnson and returned to college at UC Berkeley where he received a BS in Civil Engineering. He soon re-enlisted in the USAF during the Korean War and was stationed in Iceland and Elmendorf AFB as an engineering officer. Leaving the military, he began a long career as an engineer and surveyor in private practice. He had a vast knowledge of many subjects and was involved in the design of engineering projects of all sorts across Alaska. He and his wife Mary had 5 children - Harold III and Susan who both died young, and surviving children Ana, Norman and Roger. After retiring in 1988 he moved to a small farm near Oroville, California where he planted fruit trees and, eventually, a small chestnut orchard. When Mary passed away in 2010, Harold married Elizabeth Anne Patrick and once again was able to experience what it was like to raise kids. Liz and her children David, Donna and his favorite - Samantha - made his last years very happy ones.

I was waiting at the airstrip in Ninilchik for this plane , to go to Anchorage for a music lesson, but the weather was too bad, it couldn't land.

On several occasions early in my civil engineering career I met Harold or worked with him on some project. It was apparent that he was a gentleman and a man of gracious principle. I developed a considerable fondness and respect for this good man. I wish I had been able to spend more time with him.

My father John Mielke worked with Harold on Elmendorf and spoke highly of him. He talked about a plane crash Harold survived by swimming a considerable distance to safety. When I met Harold later, he also spoke well of Dad, and that confirmed my trust in both of them.

Will miss you Dad. Know that Norman, Roger and me are sharing wonderful stories of our life with you. There are some laughs too.
