Jan Raymond Andrew

1925 - 2015

Jan Raymond Andrew, 90, of Chugiak, Alaska, passed away in Anchorage, Alaska, at Providence Extended Care on April 22, 2015. Jan was born on March 8, 1925, in Charleston, S.C. He was a member of the U.S. Navy from 1943-1945, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honored by the military with the Victory Medal for World War II, the Asiatic-Pacific Area Ribbon and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon. Jan lived in California, Hawaii, and Missouri, settling in Alaska in 1959, where he homesteaded land outside of what was then the Village of Wasilla. He was a longtime member of Saint Andrew Parish in Eagle River, Alaska. Jan began his working life as a newspaper boy for the Los Angeles Times and eventually became the newspaper's circulation manager. After his years of military service he was the circulation manager for the Anchorage Times, a bartender for the "World Famous 'I' Bar" and a security officer on the North Slope. Jan loved to share his stories about life with the young and old alike. His family and friends state, "Once in a while you find a friend who'll be a friend forever - Once in a while a friend is found who's a friend right from the start - Once in a while a friendship's made that really warms the heart - Once is a while a friendship's formed to last a lifetime through - It really does happen, just once in a while - - It happened to me and you!" Jan is survived by his children, Karen, Larry, Maureen, Christine, Marc, Jeffrey and Colleen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; and daughter, Kathleen. A small service will be held at Saint Andrew Parish in Eagle River sometime during the week of May 4 - 8, 2015. A full service will take place in the fall of this year at Saint Catherine Parish at Kapaa, Kauai Hawaii, where Jan will be laid to rest with his wife, Pat. Services are entrusted to Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home.
