JoAnn Fletcher Obituary

JoAnn Catherine (Klomp) Fletcher, 76, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2014 at St. Elias Specialty Hospital in Anchorage due to complications following cardiac surgery. JoAnn lived for 45 years in Fairbanks and was preceded in death by her late husband, Gordon.

JoAnn was born on Oct. 8, 1937 in Chicago, Ill. to Helen and Harry Klomp. She grew up on a farm in Spokane Valley, Wash. and graduated from Otis Orchards High School. JoAnn attended Eastern Washington University before heading north to Alaska for new adventures.

On a frigid night in Jan. 1969, JoAnn's car broke down on First Avenue in Fairbanks. She walked into The Past Time Bar looking for help and walked out with her future husband, John "Gordon" Fletcher. JoAnn and Gordon spent the pipeline boom days travelling to Afognak Island, wintering in Whitehorse and homesteading in Ester before making their permanent home north of Fairbanks. There they would raise two children, which JoAnn described as "the best accomplishment of my life."

JoAnn was a full-time homemaker for most of her life, but also worked as a bookkeeper and bus attendant for special-needs students. She was involved for over four decades in several volunteer service organizations, most notably Epsilon Sigma Alpha, the Elks Lodge and a member of Loyal Order of Moose since January 1st 1967.

She enjoyed painting, ceramics, berry picking, halibut fishing and cheering her favorite football team, the Seattle Seahawks. Her favorite expression came from poet William Arthur Ward, who wrote: "a cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition."

JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her older brother, Fred Klomp of Post Falls, ID; and her younger sister, Sylvia Clift of Coeur d'Alene, ID.

She is survived by her son, Jack, his wife Jillian, and their newborn son Jackson, of Trinidad, Colo.; her daughter Sabrina and wife Melissa of Beckley, W. VA.; her older brother, Johnny Klomp and his wife Beverly of Liberty Lake, Wash.; and numerous other family and friends throughout Alaska, Canada, and the Lower 48.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, May 28 at 6 p.m. at the Farthest North Moose Lodge 1392, 98 Tenth Ave, in Fairbanks. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of JoAnn Fletcher to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital online at www.stjude.org and Moose Heart at www.moosecharities.org.

Joann was a favorite with my middle-school students. Not only was she firm but kind with them on the bus, she volunteered her time to teach them new craft skills. We all loved her to pieces. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Wish we could be home right now, but we will be celebrating your life tomorrow here in Colorado, JoAnn! That family Christmas we spent in Eagle River was so special. We will always remember you laughing in Jack and Jill's kitchen while cooking up some of your world-famous halibut, then heading over to the Holy Spirit Cathedral for Midnight Mass. Who knew Gordon had such a beautiful baritone? Thank you for all of your love and laughter over the years.

Joanne was a one of a kind lady. She knew no stranger. She was always helping someone or doing something. There is going to be a big hole left in this community. I am pretty sure she has gathered all her friends and family and having a party. May god bless the family.

I am sorry for your loss. Our heavenly Father is the God of all comfort. May he give you peace and comfort during this time.

Joann, You are missed. Your smile and laughter, your enthusiasm for life, and your big heart for all. Thank you for the good times we shared.

Joann was friendly, kindhearted and compassionate...a person you'd see at Safeway and spend 20-30 minutes just chatting. She would often drop a platter of cookies by our house for the kids to devour. She took the time to watch our son Kevin play basketball, letting him know although she enjoyed watching his games, she loved that Gonzaga "Zags" basketball team even more.
Both Joann and her husband Gordy were wonderful family friends and great people.
Condolences to Jack and Sabrina.

I am so glad I was able to visit Joann last July. Joann and I were work and social buddies between 1969 and 1972 when we both worked for Independent Lumber on South Cushman. I am sure my sister Cindy Walker will greatly miss here as they also became good friends. Rest in peace Joann I will not forget you.

Joann was a fellow ESA sorority sister who was always at the center of a project to help others while having a good time. We shared time both before children and after, and being a mom was truly the highlight of her life. She will be missed by many, but all who went before are surely enjoying her laughter today. My condolences to Jack and Sabrina and their families. Your mom was one of the best!

Joanne will be missed in the community. She never knew a stranger they were her friends immediately. She loved her sports. Hopefully she is at peace with the rest of her family in heaven.
