Johari Hodari Obituary

Anchorage resident Johari Za Kiyah Azziza Hodari, 13, died of carbon monoxide poisoning May 10, 2007, at home.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater Friendship Baptist Church, 903 E. 13th Ave., with the Rev. Leon May I officiating. Visitation will begin at noon. Pallbearers will be Timone Solitaire, D'alan Goodhope, Marcus Holeness and Mark Bell. Burial will follow at Angelus Memorial Park. A celebration of life service will be from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Laborers Union Hall, 2501 Commercial Drive.
Johari was born Jan. 31, 1994, in Anchorage. She attended Katmi Elmendorf, Government Hill, Taku and Rogers Park elementary schools, and Romig Middle School, where she was an honor roll student and mediator.
Johari loved gymnastics, hanging out with friends, and singing.
Her mother wrote: "Johari: 'Precious stone possessing special qualities.' Her name fit her perfectly, the ability to touch everyone who knew her in a very silent way. Johari was my daughter and only 13, but in so many ways she was my mentor and my friend. Johari touched lives so deeply, and her physical presence will be missed, but spiritually her presence lives on."
Survivors include her mother, Denita A. Goodhope; father, Sababu Hodari; stepfather, Herman Goodhope; sisters, Fatimah Butler and Bianca Leday-Fresh; brothers, Timone Solitaire, D'alan Goodhope, John Leday, James Leday and Rapheal Leday; and grandparents, Iris Monnette, Levi Solitaire and Leaster Drummer.
Memorial contributions may be made to P.O. Box 201412, Anchorage 99520.
Arrangements were by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, Bragaw Chapel.

Dear Mr., Mrs. Goodhope & Family,

I send you my sincerest sympathy. I feel at a time like this the only thing I can do is pray time will heal the pain of such a great loss. I met Johari through my granddaughter Chaunti Hall, who was a friend of hers. They met while attending Rogers Park School. It truly saddens my heart because she was such a delightful and respectful child.
