John Romig Obituary

Lifelong Alaska resident John Frederick Romig, 53, died Sept. 19, 2009, at his home in Peters Creek. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St. John was born Dec. 7, 1955, at Providence Hospital to Dr. Howard G. Romig and Betty Romig. In his youth he was an avid athlete, hunter and fisherman. As a young man, he helped build the Alaska Pipeline and remained a member of Teamsters Local 959 throughout his life. John was an ardent believer in organized labor and fought for workers' rights as a business representative for the Teamsters. His most important and cherished role in life, however, was that of a devoted, loving father to his twin children, Silas Romig and Marlee Romig. All of those whose lives he touched will remember him for his good humor, compassion and generosity. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him, and leave a hole in their hearts that can never be filled. John is survived by his children, Marlee and Silas Romig; mother, Betty Romig of Madison, Wis.; siblings, Joe Romig, Delcie Breechen, Susan Romig, Robert Romig, Ella Romig, Howard Romig, Ben Romig, Elizabeth Romig, special sister and friend, Virginia Dennis, and Janet LaRue, Karl Romig, Kerry Romig, Amy Romig and "Little Joe" Romig; and the mother of his children and very dear friend, Julie J. Anderson of Eagle River and her husband, Rod Anderson. John was preceded in death by his brother, Joe Romig in 1958; and his father, Dr. Howard G. Romig, in 1987. In lieu of flowers, friends and family members can express their condolences by making donations to John's memorial account at Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, account No. 1483271, or by attending the service.

To Julie, Marlee, Silas, Ellen, Betty, Howard, and all the rest of you that are still here. I first met John, who I guess was the baby some where around the school year of 1992/93. After seeing Marlee and Silas and their last name of course, I questioned John if he was related to the Romigs from 'L' Street. He said they are my brothers and sisters. Hi!, to you all that are still here. I would love to talk to you again. My daughter Rebecca King went thru school with Silas and Marlee. Both of us were shocked to read about John's passing. All thru the school years he would greet us with his great smile! By the time we read about his passing it was to late to make the service. Please know that the Jordets/Kings & Palmers prayers are with you in your time of loss.

The first time I met John was when at I flew in to Upper Russia Lake with Dr. Romig. I was nine years old and John wanted to sell me a Butterfinger candy bar! To which I didn't have 25 cents, so he said, you can pay me later kid! Thats' what started my friendship with John and the Romig family for over fifty years.(with many years of moose hunting) John will be missed by many friends! Henry Denton

Our family has a hole in it without you, John. Every memory I have of you is good - playing football, swimming, summer cookouts, walking through the Fall leaves. You were always one of my favorite cousins and I am sadder without you.

(Julie/Rod), the kids and all of John's family,
How sad to hear John is no longer with us! I will miss running into him and chatting in the grocery stores or Post Office. He always took the time - on his own time - and gave me a brighter sense of encouragement and honesty in our affiliated communications. A "Brother" gone too soon, RIP dear John!

I consider John as a father! I lived with him for 5 months and that's what he is for me, a father!
Be at peace dad!
This is sad day for me.

With tears streaming down my face, I struggle to find words to ease the sense of loss that we are all feeling right now.

John,
I will miss your never ending sense of humor, your ablility to make light of just about any situation and the fact that you always made the time to just sit and listen, never once being judgmental. Your love for your children was unfaltering and I know they were proud to call you "Dad".

To Betty, Marlee, Silas, Julie and Rod, and the rest of the family, please accept my deepest sympathy. John was blessed with a sweet soul, one that will live on for eternity. Be assured, he will never be far from those he loves.

My condolences to John's family. I remember John's dedication to the working man as he was my Teamster BA for several years. John was taken away from us far too soon. I join my Teamster brothers and sisters in mourning his passing.
