John Treptow Obituary

As the snow began to fall for the first time on Oct. 20, 2014, John Alan Treptow lost his battle with liver cancer. John, 68, lived in Anchorage for the past 38 years and worked as an attorney. During his years in Alaska, John worked for Atkinson, Conway and Ganon; Kessel, Young and Logan; Dorsey & Whitney L.L.P.; and finally for the State of Alaska, serving as a Senior Assistant Attorney General. John was born in Fairmont, Minn. A few years later, the family moved to Northbrook, Ill. Upon graduation from Glennbrook North High School, John was accepted at the Washington University in St. Louis. Here he obtained both his undergraduate bachelor's and law degrees. John was an immensely talented athlete. He was one of the top high school wrestlers in Illinois. John was a born leader. He served as president of his fraternity, Kappa Sigma. As an attorney, he received countless awards for his pro bono work in maritime, employment, healthcare and environmental law. Regardless of the outcome in the courtroom, John always treated his colleagues, staff and his opponents with the respect that they deserved. His presence in the courtroom demanded respect making him a worthy opponent in any situation. However, his selflessness, kindness and great sense of humor touched so many lives inside and outside the workplace. This became even more prevalent when John was at the hockey rink watching his three boys play hockey. The rink was where John was able to show he was more than just an attorney; he was a father and a mentor. John was a devoted husband, loving father and son. John loved his life in Alaska, where he met the love of his life, Barbara. The couple celebrated their 29th anniversary this past July. John was a sincere and compassionate individual, always going to great lengths to take exceptional care of his family and home. John especially loved his time with his two golden retrievers, Casey and Tanner. John is survived by his father, Charles; mother, Ruth; brother, Rick and wife, Barbara; and sons, Andrew, Matthew and Adam. John was a devoted husband, loving father and son. No words can truly express the sadness in our hearts when we lose someone who we love so dearly. John's family will host a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, at Captain Cook's Quarter Deck from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.; remarks at 5:30 p.m. Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

Every time I think of Alaska, which is often, I think of John.
I knew him in law school, he was in my class. I wish that I had arranged to spend time in Alaska, watching Treptow-Hocky @ Diamond HS & just visiting. My dream was, when we both were old, to have John take us on a week or ten day tour of what he thought was important to see in Alaska. I still miss him & probably always will.

I had the pleasure of working down the hall from John at the Department of Law before I retired. He was an outstanding lawyer, of course, but what most impressed me about him was his kindness. He would go out of his way to complement others and to share his knowledge and experience. He was a very special individual and I felt fortunate to have known him.

The Kroll family sends our deepest sympathies to you all. We enjoyed getting to know him at the rink and on our hockey trips. Seemed like John would always find a golf course for the kids to play at during some of the trips and Zak always told us how "cool" Johh was. I'll miss running into him at Fred's and hearing how the family is doing...may time and memories help you make it thru this difficult time. Shari Kroll

I met John within mere weeks of starting a new job at the Alaska Bar Association. He was instantly a steadfast supporter and comrade in our joint goals of equal access to justice. He was creative, tenacious, patient, and ever so kind. Ten years later it was like not a day had passed since we first met--he was just as committed to the cause and of course, had possibly grown even more kinder. The loss of John is huge to many circles--family, friends, community--and I thank the Treptow family for having shared their amazing lion of a husband, father, and friend with all of us. I'm thinking of you all.

I'm very sorry to hear that John passed away. In our dealings as attorneys, he was honorable, competent, fair and you could trust him at his word. That is high praise for an attorney. But even more, he was a good man.

The Rounds family was so shocked and saddened to hear of this. WE adored this wonderful hockey dad and family man as we knew him. Mr T. was an all time favorite of the hockey moms, such a steady gentleman, kind and consistent.
He also mentored Taylor as he headed off to Law school, helping him decide where to get his education, this took place at the Blue Line club at the Ice rink.
We spent many Thanksgivings and Christmas breaks traveling, he enjoyed his boys and was always a proud father. He also provided Legal help for the team!
Big hugs to you all as you face life remembering him always, as we all will. The Rounds fam

To Matthew, Andrew and Adam; The loss cuts deep... Your Dad was my all time favorite Hockey Dad. On our trips to B.C. he would share the most romantic stories of how he met your mom and how quickly and deeply they fell in love. And how quickely your family became to be. You each gave him so much to be proud of. He emplifies the word "father" a legacy of unconditional love and respect. I will never forget the time he saved my Trevor John Buckmeier (3 years old) from certain death during the Alaska State Hockey Tournement when Subway Sports Center was under construction. My Trevor John managed to get him self hoisted up on an a center beam during the construction while I was distracted by the play. It was your father that said to me in the most calm and angelic voice, "Teri, is that your Trevor John up there on the Center Beam" Followed by... in the calmest voice I have ever heard... "what ever you do, do not call Trevor's name. He went on to calmly talk Trevor off of the center beam into safety. Your Mom is one of the strongest women I know. I am truely priviledged to have known your family and I can honestly say we have missed you. Trevor John is now a U-18 Goalie for the Alaska Allstars and anytime you want to hear the slap of the puck; you know where I will be, behind the net. Huge hugs. I have cancelled my trip to Africa to see you very soon. Best in life. Mama Buck!

To the Treptow Family,

We were both very sad to learn of John's passing. He was a gifted attorney and, as many have commented, a real gentleman in every respect. He was very well liked and his considerable talents will be sorely missed.

Barbara, Andrew, Matt and Adam, my sincere condolences on your great loss. I had the pleasure of working with John in the early 80's at Atkinson, Conway, Bell & Gagnon (as it was known then)and recently at the Attorney General's office. I left the state for 12 years and returned in 1998; I ran into John after 12 years, he never missed a beat he still called me by my first and middle name; He was the only person that has ever done that. John always treated me with kindness and respect. I will miss him greatly.

A true gentleman has left us. From our first meeting which featured you with multiple hockey bags slung over your shoulder as your gave your all for Andrew, Matthew and Adam, to our professional dealings; it was always a pleasure to be in your company. You were one of those friends who was always at the ready with a kind word and a steady hand on the tiller. May Barbara and your sons find some measure of comfort within the fashion in which they remember you. It was a privilege to have known you. Thank you for all your rink-side chats.

My love and prayers Barbra, Andrew, Matt , Adam and the Treptow family. I didnt get to see John very often but I would see the boys and hear of their accomplishments. John would light up talking about "his guys" and was always such a huge part and inspiration in their lives. I will always remember when Barbra first met John. We all knew he was the "one". The love of her life. John was the epitome of selflessness and a completely loving, and caring husband, father and friend. I know his spirit and heart will live on in his boys. Hoping that the love of all your family and friends will be comforting at this very difficult time All my love

I'm very glad to have known John and sad that I didn't continue the closeness and been aware of his illness after I moved from Anchorage. I will remember him as a kind and thoughtful person who was always fun to be with. I pass my best hopes on to Barbara and to his now adult sons who I met only as beginning hockey players.
