Joseph Wilcox Obituary

Joseph Lester Wilcox, age 70, passed away in Boquette, Panama, on May 1, 2018. He was born on Feb. 1, 1948, in Medford, Ore., where he enjoyed deer hunting, trout fishing and camping. He loved the hot dogs and s'mores!
Joe graduated from Crater High School in 1966, and following technical college, was lured to Alaska by the beautiful scenery. He purchased his own X-ray machine and retrofitted a pickup truck to transport it. This business provided medical services in places such as prisons, nursing homes and coal mines. He worked at Alaska Regional Hospital and finished his career of 35 years at the Alaska Native Medical Center.
Joe had a great appreciation for music. He sang in church choirs as well as the Anchorage Concert Chorus for 32 years. His passion for music gave him the opportunity to travel to Europe, England, Wales and Spain.
He was an avid reader, loved cats, enjoyed traveling, gardening, skiing and celebrating the holidays with family.
A warm climate was a must following his retirement. Joe moved to a beautiful town in Panama where he spent three years enjoying many new friends, hiking, singing in a choir and contributing time to the local Rotary club. He dedicated a great deal of his time to work on projects for the local children.
Joe will be greatly missed by his children, Zachary Wilcox of Anchorage, Alaska, and Briana Elzy (Marques Elzy) of Citrus Springs, Fla. He was adored by his grandchildren: Olivia, Mya, Jayden, Lila and Jaxson. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Lester Allen Wilcox Jr. and Joan Wilcox. He is survived by four siblings, Carol Wilcox, Beth (Mike) Gibson, Dave (Gay) Wilcox and Joy Wilcox-Farley; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on June 22, 2018, at 6:30 p.m., at St. John United Methodist Church, 1801 O'Malley Road in Anchorage.
