Leonard Marcus Obituary

On July 20, 2011 our brother, uncle, nephew, stepson, and friend Leonard Marcus, succumbed to injuries from a tragic motorcycle crash on Dempster Highway in the Yukon. In a coma, he was medivaced to Whitehorse General Hospital, then airlifted to Harborview Hospital in Seattle. Never emerging from his coma, he was surrounded by members of his family at the time of his premature death.

A celebration of Leonard Marcus' life will be held in Anchorage on Friday August 12th from 6-10 p.m. Call friend and colleague, Vivian at (907) 351-5413 for more information.

Leonard was born in Covina, California on May 4, 1961 and graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1986 with a BA in Environmental Studies. Between semesters he worked as a forest firefighter for the State of California and as a park ranger at Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks in Utah. He was passionate about nature and after graduation combined this love with his degree as he began to work for Ecology and Environment. He then relocated to Alaska in 1996 which provided adventure, nature and solitude; all items Len loved.

Len was both a very kind and quite private individual. His character and values though were not private; his anger about injustice, his kindness, his sense of fairness and honesty, and his support of social justice were quietly evident to all. Though he didn't share his personal life, his values spoke volumes. Len was a colleague, musician, tennis partner, family member, and friend.

Len is survived by his family in California and Texas and his most special cat, Toolie, in Alaska. Len's final gift was donating his body for scientific research. He was a gentle soul and will be missed by all who knew him. Len's final gift was donating his body for scientific research. He was a gentle soul and will be missed by all who knew him.

Donations honoring Len's memory can be made to LifeCenter Northwest, a nonprofit organ procurement organization. Their website is www.lcnw.org .

The family would like to acknowledge all of Len's friends and colleagues - local and nationwide - for their caring and support. In addition, special thanks to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Airlift Northwest, the compassionate staff from LifeCenter Northwest and the many special people at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

I met Len through work fifteen years ago. It was an incredible treat to work with Len, since he was a very trustworthy and respectful coworker. He was also very professional and knowledgeable which he willingly shared as a mentor. He was such a good person and extremely likable that he made a lasting impression. I can vividly recall him after all these years. My sympathies to the family and all who treasured him.

I did not know Mr Marcus, but he sounds like a caring person. This world is much better for his being in it and lessened by his loss.
