Megan Rawson Obituary

Born in Lander, Wyoming, Megan Rawson moved with her parents, Timothy Rawson and Alison Cojocar, a few months later to Alaska. In Anchorage she attended Lake Otis Elementary, Polaris K-12, and East High schools. Megan was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Chicago, where she majored in the biological sciences with an ambition toward a career in medicine. Prior to professional school she opted for some years of service with the Teach For America program and found herself teaching science in Crownpoint, New Mexico, within the Navajo Nation. Megan found deep meaning and purpose in this work and began to rethink her career priorities. Brain cancer struck in December 2012. She persevered through the treatments, and the inevitable “Why me?” question, with admirable grace. Upon recovery she earned a master’s degree in teaching and taught science for the 2015-16 year at East High. Then her cancer returned and no one had any solutions. Megan is survived by her parents and sister Leslie. She was loved by all who knew her. A celebration will be held Sunday, October 9, two to four o’clock, at the Lydia Selkregg Chalet in Russian Jack Springs Park. At Megan’s request, there is a scholarship fund in her name set up with the Alaska Community Foundation. This will assist an East High graduate who intends to study for a teaching degree. Donations may be made online.

Even though Ms. Megan was dealt a difficult hand, complaining or acknowledging her plight was not her nature. She was working on a beautiful multi-colored sweater for a little person, and am told that the sweater will be completed by another talented knitter in her honor. Ms. Megan would come and knit alongside a changing group; it was a gift she gave to us since it allowed us to appreciate her fine craftsmanship and gentle manner. May Ms. Megan's untimely passing motivate each and every one of us to live our lives with passion, sensitivity and fearlessness. May all who miss Megan find comfort in the loving and gallant manner in which she lived.

Megan was one of the bright points of my teaching career. First I had her as a student in several of my Spanish classes at East. Then she became a colleague. What a pleasure to watch her excel as a teacher and mentor. Best of all, she shared my love of geeky science and math humor. I know how much I will miss her personally. I know how much her students miss her. I am mostly thankful to have had her touch my life. Adios, Megancita.

I remember swimming with Megan with Northern Lights Swim Club, and later with her at East High as both a swimmer and manager of the team. She was always so kind, helpful, and supportive of everyone; I remember very clearly when she told me I made State one year, she was almost as happy for me as I was! I think Alaska, and the world, are a little less bright without her, and my prayers go out to the Rawson family.

I only had a brief chance to work with her at East High in the science department. It was obvious how much she enjoyed teaching the students and that the students knew how much she cared for them. I doubt any of them knew what she hid about her own health, but all benefitted from her positive energy. Best wishes to you all in this difficult time.

Megan taught my son in her biology class last year at East High. She was a fantastic teacher, and one who really "got" my son and embraced all his quirks and outside-the-box thinking. Our family is so sad to hear about the loss of Megan, and we want her family to know she touched so many lives for the better.

I remember her in Greece, so playful and bright, following her father through the ruins, exploring antiquity. Rest In Peace Megan.

Megan was a light. In death she will continue to be a light. Highly gifted, multitalented, a star in the community and the reservation; her work and her legacy will live through her students. My heart breaks for you Alyson. Forever the rock and forever a tremendous Mom and teacher. Much Love, Sue Mullane

Dear Megan, I miss you. You were able to do so much in such a short life - you touched me with, your hard work, your fortitude and the indelible outlook you had for your life- Through your mothers eyes and heart I heard her express how strong you were. And through you, I am reminded how strong your mom is. Always in my heart, Gary Stein
