Michael Ellis Obituary

Longtime Alaskan Michael Albert "Butch" Ellis, 52, died Jan. 20, 2011, at home in Delta Junction.

A service will be at 3:30 p.m. today at the Clearwater Baptist Church in Delta Junction.

Butch was born Aug. 18, 1958, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Albert and Carla Ellis.

Butch traveled to Alaska in 1977 and operated a jet-boat service in Willow. In 1983, he relocated to Delta Junction. He was one of the early Arctic Man racers, skiing behind a snowmobile at speeds most of us never reach on the highway. An avid outdoorsman, Butch loved to ski, golf and had a lifelong passion for hunting waterfowl.

In 1992, Butch met Bethe, the woman who became his wife and the mother of his two daughters. Butch sold his prized motorcycle and bought a truck with a camper so that he could introduce the girls to camping. Later, when the girls were older, he bought another motorcycle and taught Emmie to ride. She quickly grew to love motorcycles as much as her father. Butch encouraged his daughters' interests: skiing, skating, volleyball, horseback-riding and softball. As a true, good Alaskan dad, Butch took his daughters hunting.

Butch operated a hunting guide business and drove a school bus for Alaska Motor Coaches. He later worked as a heavy-equipment operator with the City of Delta Junction, eventually becoming the public works manager.

Butch joins his grandparents, Al and Ruby Taylor; and his father, Albert Ellis.

He is survived by his wife, Bethe, and daughters, Grace, 16, and Emmie, 14, of Delta Junction; his mother, Carla; sisters, Lora and Tracy; niece, Alexandria; aunt, Glamae (Dave) Griggs; uncle, Arlen Taylor; and many extended family and friends.

Bethe wrote: "Butch won his battle with cancer. It may have taken his life, but it did not take his spirit. He left this life just like he wanted, at home, in Alaska, with me by his side. He was very done with this earthly body and was ready to see what's next. He was a wonderful husband, father and best friend, and we will miss him terribly. We already do."

11 years but not a day has passed. Seems it was only yesterday I spoke with you in Boise. We prayed together. A moment of many memories I visit on a daily basis. Oh, how I wish you were here. Our mom, now 85 year incredible. I hope you know I'm fulfilling my promise to the best of my ability. They lockdown the residents frequently due to COVID. I have respiratory issues that prevent me from being permitted to visit, as they fear I may be contagious. I have no doubt she'll out live us all. I was heartbroken when I heard Scott Worth had passed away. I don't hear from the family in Alaska anymore. Your baby granddaughter is a precious newcomer & appears to share physical characteristics that you would certainly recognize. Life seems to go on though it stands still for me. God I miss you, my brother.

I remember that one time my mom and I were at Birch Brother's Pizza and mom was talking to Bethe. I walk over and nod my greetings. I took one look at Butch and nodded at him. I have never seen a man so intimidating, so strong although he had a war raging inside of him. Butch will be missed.

I met Butch in Caldwell, Idaho when he flew here to buy his new Harley Davidson from our store. He mentioned he was going to Pocatello. I asked about who he knew there and he told me. Then I asked if he knew Albert Ellis, one of my classmates at Pocatello High School. That was the connection I had to Butch. He was a big handsome guy....lots of blonde hair and an air of spirit that exactly matched the motorcycle he was buying. I often wondered what happened to him and I am so sorry to hear of his passing. He really was a memorable guy, as was his father. God bless you all.

Rest in Peace, Butch. You were more than my cousin, you were like my brother. Even though we lost touch as we grew older, I will never forget you. The love and sibling rivalry will always be dear to my heart. God Bless your soul. May your family find peace knowing you are with the Lord.

To the family of Butch Ellis,
We send our heartfelt prayers
to you at this sorrowful time.

Having moved from Delta several
years ago, we did not have the
honor of meeting Butch.

We met Emmie through our grand-daughter, Makala Hart-Somers.
Our son, Bret and his wife Lori,
always spoke so very highly of Butch
and his family.
Sincerely,

Linda and Roger Somers
