Norman Tibbetts Obituary

Anchorage resident Norman Tibbetts, 82, died July 11, 2009, at home of natural causes. A memorial service will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel on Klatt Road. A funeral Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Cathedral with Father Vincent Kelber officiating. Burial will be at Angelus Memorial Park. Active pallbearers include Greg Tibbetts, Ken Tibbetts, Norman Tibbetts, Perry Duffy, Patrick Metcalf and Jerome Ross. Mr. Tibbetts was born Aug. 3, 1926, in Los Angeles. At age 17, he enlisted in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii. After the war, he earned his GED and married his lifelong love, Celeste Lunenschloss. He moved to Naknek in 1956 and his family followed. He began his flying career in Bristol Bay. In 1965, he moved to Anchorage and became the owner of Isaac's Pumping. He continued to fly summers in Bristol Bay. In 1987 he worked for PennAir in sales and marketing until his retirement in 2001. His wife, Celeste Tibbetts, died on June 5, 1993. Norm's life was blessed with another fine lady and he married Doris Culligan in August 1994. Mr. Tibbetts was an accomplished artist as well, specializing in carving and painting. He never sold his pictures because he received more by giving them away to friends and family. He enjoyed NASCAR and watching races and football games with his family. He loved listening to music and reading about his children's and grandchildren's accomplishments. He loved to travel, Hawaii being his favorite destination. His family said: "We will remember dad for the tremendous love he showed for his family, friends, and those most in need and less fortunate. There was never a question of how much he loved us. He was a man of many talents who always stressed sportsmanship and kindness. Always a fighter, he endured so much late in life, but his amazing will and strength of heart remained strong until the end." Mr. Tibbetts is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Jane Tibbetts, Ken and Elaine Tibbetts, and Norman and Jacki Tibbetts; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Perry Duffy, Maria Tibbetts and Patrick Metcalf, and Monica and Jerome Ross, all of Anchorage; 14 grandchildren, Rachel Duffy, Travis Tibbetts, Luke Duffy, Wes Tibbetts, Rebecca Duffy, Brooke Derby, Carly Tibbetts, Jeni Tibbetts, Paul Duffy, Gene Tibbetts, Vince Fell, Tessa Metcalf, Sierra Metcalf and Race Rome, and Melissa Tibbetts; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Tibbetts and Chuck Tibbetts; and many other family members and close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, George Tibbetts; mother, Helen Tibbetts Harris; and his beloved wife, Celeste Tibbetts. Memorial donations may be sent to Amedisys Hospice of Anchorage, 3909 Arctic Blvd., Suite 102, Anchorage 99503, in memory of Norman Tibbetts.

To the Norm Tibbets family: I especially remember Norm when we used to race go-karts. He was the ultimate speedster. My family will always remember him with fondness and love. He was a guiding hand for us "restless teens". Full throttle Norm. God bless you.

Our Deepest condolences to the Tibbett’s and Duffy Family. I meet Norm Tibbett’s when I worked at PenAir and he was always the highlight of my day. He was always quick with a joke and had the warmest personality, you always felt like a very special friend and college. Everything has gone by so fast and I have lost touch with Norm in over a year, but I will always remember him with fond memories. The world will never be the same. Fly high and keep everyone laughing up there. God Speed Norm.

I first met Norm in the mid-1960's out at Naknek and flew hundred of hours with him over the years. In later life he would come to Seattle for shoulder repair and I would get out and see him a couple or three times a week, just because he was a such good friend and a long way from home. He would have done the same thing for me if I was in Anchorage under similar circumstances. I really feel this loss of someone so important to my past and such a really good guy, great pilot, a fine Dad and a true gentleman.

Norm Tibbetts will always be in my memory. He could walk into a room and always knew everyone or soon would. He had the warmest personality, you always felt like his special friend. He could crack a joke through boring meetings and make them worth scouting out Norm to sit with. Life has moved so fast and I havent seen Norm in over a year, but I will always remember him with fond memories. Boring meetings will never be the same here on earth. God Speed Norm.

Forty one years ago we met Norm while living in King Salmon for the summer. With an always ready sense of humor, he was a hard working and genuine soul who was true to himself, family, and friends. What a wonderful legacy he leaves his children and grandchildren. We will surely miss him.

To the Tibbets extended family,

Your dad and grandpa was obviously a very fine man, judging by the ethics and values that his kids and grandkids exhibit.

Our thoughts are with all of you.

Norm will be missed by all who knew him. He had a sympathetic ear, a helping hand and a smile that was like a lighthouse, especially during busy summers in Bristol Bay. Heartfelt condolences to the family.

I have known Norm for 40 plus years - from my days with PNA and later WAL and the many adventures in between. We could have both worked for the same airline we were so much of a team.
Later when PenAir was in Anchorage and two Norm's were hard to sort out we thought that "Good Norm or Bad Norm" might be a solution. I lobied hard for the Good Norm title and even had Celeste supporting me at times. In the end it was always Norm Tibbetts that deserved it. All of us will miss his ready smile and humor. My deepest sympathys to his family and close friends.

Dear family of Norman,

It was a privilege to be involved with Norm's care. I thank you so much for the request for donations to Amedisys hospice.

I enjoyed all of the family, and although I just met you and him a few days before his death, I feel like I knew Norm and your family for a long time, just by your stories.

Blessings to all of you, and may God send you much comfort.

" A Prince of a man" really does describe Norm. He most certainly infused these wonderful qualities in his large loving family who we're sure will miss him dearly. We're so glad we ran into him at the First Communion and could say hi and of course get a hug. God Bless your family and we offer our heartfelt condolences.

Norm was one of the most incredible men I've ever known. It was always possible to tell when he'd been at the ticket counter, because all the ladies would be blushing and eating candy! Every time he came to my office he had a little stash of candy and goodies - he said it was to lure the girls to come closer. Thank you for sharing him with us - he was a lovely gentleman and will be greatly missed.

Norm was likely the nicest man I ever knew. He was a gentleman, kind, warm, candid, and certainly well respected and appreciated by the aviation community. May the memories of Norm be a comfort during your time of grief.

My deepest sympathies to all the Tibbetts families. You were blessed to have such a loving and caring father and grandfather. He was a very special man in my life and we felt that God put us together at a time when we both needed someone. He had a deep faith and lived what he believed - always cheerful and kind to everyone he met, always willing to help someone in need. Now he is at peace with his maker.
