Richard Leo Obituary

Rick Leo spent the first years of his life in the suburbs outside of Chicago. Even here, he sought out what pockets of natural beauty he could find -untended fields, small stands of trees, "the crick." He was driven by an innate love for the earth that was never taught. It came from within. His gang of friends called him Father Explorer.

Briefly flirting with the possibility of success as defined by western culture (a Harvard education, advertising job in Manhattan), Rick chose to follow his dreams rather than convention. He bought a one way ticket to Anchorage, hitchhiked up to the Susitna Valley, and homesteaded here in the early 80's. He found a world that he truly loved, and immeasurable successes on his own terms. He raised three sons, and was a father figure to the local kids. He told his story of life on the remote homestead in countless articles and two books:Edges of the Earth and Way OutHere.

For decades Rick worked to keep the South Denali wilderness undeveloped and as pristine as he'd found it. At the time of his death he was actively working to keep the Susitna River wild by opposing the Watana/Susitna dam. Rick would want the website mentioned,www.susitnarivercoalition.org, as that effort continues after his death.

He was a teacher, friend, father, husband, and adventurer. From walking alone across the Tibetan Plateau to soloing Denali to sailing through New Zealand to countless other adventures and experiences, Rick's life is an example to us all of a life well lived. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him and by the land itself - the home he loved so much.

Rick is survived by three sons, Janus, Forrest, and Krister, daughter-in-law Amanda; and by his mother Dolores, brother John, sister Wendy, niece Ariel, nephews Paul and Adrian, and ex-wives Michele and Lucia. A gathering to celebrate Rick's life will be held at NSI in Talkeetna on Friday, January 3rd, at 3 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to the RCL Homestead Preservation Fund, Wells Fargo, Wasilla.

Condolences and much love. I read Richard Leo's book in the early 90's while I was in a long term recovery center. It influenced my life, sporadically referring to the his experience moving to Alaska :)

I'm now reading his first book and it is as if I am there in Alaska. He lived his life intensely and his heritage ist timeless. A good example for all of us.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Rick's passing and my condolences to his family. I met him while he was still at Harvard and his energy and enthusiasm for life was contagious. We spent many a night drinking Saki or Retsina, which he introduced me to. There was a little Greek place that we would frequent late at night and that is where I learned to appreciate Greek coffee - grounds and all. He was a great tennis player and when we went jogging he could run circles around me - literally. I went to MIT and knew so little about literature - he made the written word so exciting. I'll never forget when Geffen bought the movie rights to his first book - he was so excited. I wrote a theme song for it - but it was never picked up. In later years we got to see less and less of each other, but I remember the last time I met him for lunch at the Hyatt in New York - same old Rick - he had a twinkle in his eye that I will never forget. He was so proud of his children. Rest well my friend - you will always be in our hearts.

Rick is my cousin. As a child and teen, when I would find out that his mom, my dearest Aunt Dee and his Dad,Uncle Ralph Leo were coming to visit my Grandma Nicolena which is Uncle Ralph's sister; I would be so excited to see Rick, John(brother) and Wendy(sister). I always had this feeling I could not describe as a child...but now understand that it was the feeling that Rick was going to do really great things with his life. I am so glad that he lived the life he desired and did it to his fullest. My heart goes to his family for the sudden loss. May his spirit be always with us.

I met Rick about 25 years ago in Anchorage, when he would visit my neighbors on his trips to the big city. I will always remember his sweet personality and brilliant mind. He would have his son Janus in his backpack and always seemed so happy and energetic. Even though so much time has passed, I feel the loss of him very strongly. He was a really good man.

I knew Rick years ago in high school and remember him as kind, articulate and accepting. I pray for his family in the sadness of their loss, and thank God that the world had been graced by Rick on this earth for the time he was here.

I grew up with Rick and attended grammar and high school with him. Rick was always a bright, articulate guy and we always know he would do important things in his life. I wrote to him after I read his first book. He responded and was the same old "Ricky". I'm just sorry I never got to see him again. He will be sorely missed.

Rick's first book was instrumental in convincing me to finally make the trip up here, and once here, I stayed. I share his vision of wilderness, and his ethics toward the environment. Let's hope his legacy is not lost on future generations, and hopefully one day a memorial plaque in his honor, instead of a dam!

I knew Rick since he was 18 and he grew to become my best friend. His first book was titled "Edges of the Earth" and he came to know those edges very well.. I will miss him more than I can write here. --

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. As I mentioned in my ADN Compass piece, Mr. Leo inspired me to embrace Alaska and reach for a life closer to the wilderness. I admired his writings and his conviction to providing a balance to the super-charged development at all costs mentality, which is important in any democratic process. That took guts. Mr. Leo goes the way of the Denali wolves he wanted to protect. The loss of his voice in the wilderness is a loss to the entire process of checks and balances. I sincerely hope his kids know that he meant a great deal to Alaska.

Taken Christmas morning. Sending you healing energy.

I didn't really know Rick until the Coalition for the River was formed. His ability to get things done and keep going against obstacles was admirable. The Coalition and the communities of Trapper Creek and Talkeetna will be forever indebted to him for his work. He forged relationships w/legislators and other agencies that took the Coalition to a higher level. A remarkable person that lived his life as he saw fit, which very few people actually ever do. We will miss him so much. He must have accomplished what he came here to do and learned what he need to learn in order to go on to a higher level. My heart goes out to his family. Know that we are all grateful for his having been here for the time he had on the planet.

I'm going to miss they way Mr. Leo inspired me through his writing. I actively kept an eye out for his next missive and don't think I have ever missed a word. What a tragic loss for all of us.

So very sorry for the loss of your dear love one. I didn't know Mr Leo but from what I've read about him he truly loved God's creation. Please accept my heartfelt condolences in prayer. May the God who comforts all the mourning ones be with his family and friends in this most difficult time. Isa 61:2
