Robert Kehrer Obituary

Robert Scott Kehrer, 44 of Wasilla, AK, was tragically taken on Saturday, August 9, 2014 in a pack rafting accident on the Tana River near McCarthy, AK while competing in the Alaska Wilderness Classic, a long distance endurance challenge. A devoted husband, son, friend and co-worker, Rob is survived by his wife Tamra Carlisle Kehrer of Wasilla, AK; his mother, Joan Kehrer (John Webster) of Lakewood, CO; his father, John Kehrer (Barb) of Wheatridge, CO; his brother, Donnie Prescott of Colorado and many other family members. His caring and positive attitude in life will be deeply missed by his family, friends and co-workers. Rob was born on December 1, 1969 in Wheatridge, CO, attended Regis High School in Denver, CO and went on to earn a BA in Social Service at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. After college, Rob moved to Anchorage, AK and began working at the McLaughlin Youth Center as a Youth Counselor in 1998. He held a variety of positions and titles over the last 16 years at McLaughlin and was most currently a Unit Supervisor. Rob was a kind and compassionate counselor who cared deeply and was willing to stand up and fight for what he believed. In his personal life, Rob had a passion for playing rugby and recently started to referee matches. Rob was a 10 year veteran of the Alaska Wilderness Classic. He competed in both winter and summer endurance challenges, and will be remembered for his volunteer work during the Iditarod Trail Invitational as the host of a checkpoint in Rohn. He greeted many a weary competitor with his warm smile, easy nature and cup of hot soup. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to fish, hike, cross-country ski, spend time at the cabin he was building at Redshirt, snowshoe, snowmobile - every facet of outdoor life. His goal in his 40's was to get better at hunting and fishing. Friends and family will remember Rob's infectious smile, caring nature, deep love for his wife Tammy and his fierce advocacy for the people and causes he believed in. The Service and Celebration of Life will be held at the Alaska Mountain Rugby Grounds located at 19001 Findland Street Anchorage, AK 99516 on Saturday at 1 p.m. Father Leo Walsh will conduct a service followed by a Celebration of Rob's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Rob's name to one of the following charities: AK Rugby Foundation, Inc. (5641 E 99th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99507) or The Rob Kehrer Wilderness Classic Memorial Fund (on the memo line please include the account number #720123013149 and address to Key Bank, 101 W Benson Blvd, Anchorage, AK 99503).

Rob I was saddened to hear of your passing. I met you in the police explorers back when we were teens and remember the fun times we had. Even though we lost touch after those days you were one of those who I never forgot and often thought about. Sorry we didn't touch base since then. You will be missed. Rest in Peace!

I worked with Rob for the better part of 14 years at MYC and will miss all the great journeys we took together as we figured out this thing we called counseling. You have impacted my life in too many ways to describe, all positive and all meaningful. I will miss you dearly and will never forget the great things you have done and inspired at McLaughlin. My sincerest condolences to Rob's wife, his family, his friends, his teammates and to those he touched throughout his many years as a coach, mentor and counselor.

What an enormous loss. My heart goes out to Rob's wife, family, friends and coworkers. I met Rob shortly after I moved to Alaska in 1996 and was fortunate enough to spend a good chunk of my life with him. He taught me so much about relationships, working with youth, embracing the great Alaska outdoors, pushing my limits and, most important of all, how to be a better person. I am extremely grateful and fortunate to have known Rob. This world will always feel colder without him in it.

You helped me see the rustic beauty in all aspects of life, and made me see what was truly important in life. You guided me and showed me what I could and should become. You have inspired me to challange everything and to give even when there is nothing else to give! As well as continuing to look up and climb, crawl, and laugh to new beautiful heights. I will miss you my friend and maybe you will be there as a guide when we meet for the next leg of this journey! Love ya brother!

Rob, Robinator, Mr. Kerher...mister "she washed my towels?!" This is a traumatic loss for all that knew you. Wherever you are now, I hope it's as peaceful as the great outdoors of Alaska was for you. I hope there are a million mountains for you to climb. I hope the weather is always perfect and I hope you keep an eye out for the rest of us. I know you'll rest in peace, you left us doing what you love. Your passion for Alaska's youth and you friends and family was amazing. You'll never be forgotten and we'll catch ya on the flip side. The rest of my gear is carred by #TeamHeavy. RIP Robinator.

In all the 16 years I have known Rob; the countless hours at work and around the rugby pitch I cannot remember him ever saying one mean spirited thing about another person. He was one of a kind and one of the best. I miss you and love you brother.
