Thomas Bishop Obituary

Thomas A. Bishop, 66, a Lazy Mountain resident and business owner in Palmer, died suddenly on October 1, 2013.

A Vigil prayer service will take place on Sunday, October 6th at 4:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Palmer. The funeral mass and reception will be on Monday, October 7 at 5:30 p.m., also at St. Michael's.

Tom and his wife Kathy moved in 1972 to Alaska and established a business at the Palmer airport in 1976, Nugget Aviation. He also worked for Era Aviation and Reeves Aviation for a few years. A native of California, Tom served in the Navy as a jet and helicopter mechanic and got to travel all over the world.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; his five children: Steven Bishop, Deanna and Rajvinder Singh, Karen and Erick Cordero, Mark Bishop and John and Brandy Bishop, along with his 8 loving grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Ken Bishop and Tim Bishop of Colorado and Barbara Mangione of California, and many nieces and nephews.

Tom is remembered by his family as an avid story teller, a Hershey chocolate bar aficionado, but always a man of faith, a loving father and grandfather. Tom was always willing to volunteer to help a friend and others in need.

In lieu of flowers, friends can donate to Tom's favorite charities Covenant House and the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. There will be a giving tree at the church for donations in honor of Tom.

I've been trying to think of some words to offer, other than the obligatory 'Like' on Facebook. I didn't know Tom personally very well; rather I knew of him more as a staple ingredient at St. Michael's...always there, just not right in the forefront. He was a dad - one of the many parental figures contributing to that community. I did know his kids and spent countless hours growing up with them in school and in youth group. If Tom's remarkability can be evidenced anywhere, it is in his children. I know them to be kindhearted, hardworking, compassionate and supportive and I wish them comfort during the days and years ahead.

To the whole Bishop clan, upon these shores and beyond: I always thought of Tom as a second father, a pillar of faith whose dedication to his family and those close to him was unending. I count myself blessed to have flown with him - a life-long passion that he shared so freely. My memory of Tom from my youth is the man of quiet reserve who could "discipline" with a stern look and hug you with his eyes. A true gem. He lives on in each of you, and those, near and far, that will continue to hold his memory as one of the best men they have ever known. Prayers and blessing to all -

Dear Kathy & Family:

As Archbishop Hurley said last night, we are all connected by the love that we share. It has been an honor to have known Tom and to have been connected with him, through our families, over the years. The connection will continue, I am sure, regardless of where our paths take each of us.
