Virginia Landry Obituary

Virginia M. Landry, known to her family and friends as Ginny, died April 21, 2011, in Anchorage. She was 89.

She lived the last year of her life at Providence Horizon House in Anchorage. Her family is extremely grateful to the staff there for their profound kindness and dedication to her care.

A funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Cathedral Thursday at 2 p.m.

Ginny was born in Spokane, Wash., on March 10, 1922, to David and Anna Clarke.

She and Lawrence H. Landry were married Oct. 3, 1946, in Spokane. The couple moved to Anchorage in 1957.

Ginny was a stay-at-home mother, supportive wife, loving grandmother and active community volunteer. She was a member of the Anchorage Woman's Club, a Red Cross volunteer, and donated her time and money to various other organizations including Easter Seals, Catholic Social Services and Covenant House. She was also a founding member of Bishop's Attic, a secondhand clothing and furniture store, the proceeds from which help support the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Anchorage.

Ginny is remembered fondly as an intelligent, kind, gracious and supportive person by her immediate and extended family and many longtime Anchorage friends.

She traveled extensively with her husband in Europe and North Africa, and enjoyed reading and tennis. She especially enjoyed the steadfast companionship of her husband, family and many friends.

She had two sisters, Regina and JoAnn, and one brother, Pat. Regina and Pat preceded her in death. Ginny's husband, Lawrence H. Landry, died in 2004.

In addition to her sister JoAnn, Ginny is survived by three sons, Pat, Jeff and David; daughter-in-law, Janet Hall; David's partner, Mara Rabinowitz; three grandchildren, Haines, Hattie, and Mara; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends consider making a donation to Covenant House.

Quite the lady always. Ginny will be remembered for her bright smile and being a wonderful mother.

May the family find comfort knowing she led a long and happy life filled with many years of community service and religious conviction.
