William D. Rusk

1928 - 2016

William "Bill" David Rusk, 87, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on June 8, 2016. His family requests that you email ruskmemorial@gmail.com for the upcoming service date and time. Bill was born on July 1, 1928, in Spokane, Wash., to Richard and Nellie Rusk. He moved to Alaska in 1961, to work for Evans Engine and Equipment. He volunteered as a teletype operator during the 1964 Earthquake helping many Alaskans through that difficult tragedy. In 1974, he purchased Northern Keyboard, selling pianos and organs and teaching music. After "retiring" in 1987, he worked part time for Sears and Princess Cruises, and continued to tune pianos. He enjoyed volunteering and assisting those in need. He volunteered at Providence Alaska Medical Center in the day surgery department for more than 16 years. His hobbies included volunteering, fishing, bread baking, music and making jams and jellies from local berries. Bill loved Alaska with all his heart. He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, berry-picking and flying in small planes soaking in Alaska's natural beauty. He had a passion for learning and encouraged others to do the same. He is survived by his daughter, Denise Hopkins of Burleson, Texas; two granddaughters, Angela Valgiusti of San Francisco, Calif., and Leah Stuever of Burleson, Texas; great-grandson, Adam Stuever of Burleson, Texas; sister, Teddie Sue Howey of Spokane, Wash.; life partner and longtime companion, Hildegard Johnson of Anchorage; former spouse, Carolyn P. Rusk of Anchorage; and many, many friends. He will be greatly missed. Arrangements entrusted to the Cremation Society of Alaska.
