Betty Jane Barnett McConkey, beloved mother, devoted wife, and cherished friend, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023. She was 87 years old.
Betty courageously battled diabetes for 75 years, defying the odds with her unwavering spirit and determination.
Born in Sweetwater, Betty's journey was marked by love, compassion, and a zest for life. She leaves behind a legacy that will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Betty's nurturing and selfless nature made her an exceptional mother to her two children, Kim and John. She poured her heart and soul into raising them, instilling in them the values of love, kindness, and resilience that she exemplified throughout her life.
Tragically, Betty was preceded in death by her son, John and her loving husband, Austin, who passed away a few years ago. Theirs was a bond built on a foundation of love, mutual respect, and unwavering support. Although she faced immense sorrow with Austin's passing, Betty remained resilient, finding strength in the memories they shared and the love they nurtured.
Betty had the incredible ability to touch the lives of those around her, leaving an indelible impact wherever she went. She made friends effortlessly, and her warm and inviting nature drew people towards her.
Betty's genuine kindness, infectious laughter, and unwavering positivity made her a beacon of light in the lives of many. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel valued and loved, and her impact will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to cross paths with her.
Betty spent her years living in Madisonville and Chattanooga, where she actively participated in her communities. She found joy in volunteering and lending a helping hand to those in need. Betty's compassion and willingness to give knew no bounds, and her acts of kindness brightened the lives of countless individuals.
One could often find Betty adorned in her favorite color, purple. It became a symbol of her vibrant personality and her love for life. The color purple represented her unwavering strength, resilience, and her ability to find beauty even in the face of adversity.
Her memory will be forever cherished and her spirit forever remembered.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, let us take solace in knowing that she has left an indelible mark on our lives and that her legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering strength will continue to inspire us.
A memorial service to celebrate Betty's life was held at Haven Hill Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at 12 p.m. In accordance with her wishes, dress was casual and attendees were encouraged to wear something purple. May we have gathered together to pay our respects, share stories, and find solace in the memories we hold dear.
Betty may be gone, but her spirit will forever live on in our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Betty, and thank you for the beautiful impact you made on this world.
