Annamay (Pickar) Koering, age 98, of Brainerd, MN, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 23, 2025. She was born to Leo and Marian (Dechaine) Pickar on June 12, 1927, in Brainerd.
On June 25, 1947, she married the love of her life, John "Jack" Koering, at St. Francis Church in Brainerd. Together they raised their four daughters: Barb (Bill) Matalamaki, Aitkin, MN; Pat (Bob) Hinds, St. Cloud, MN; Sharon (Craig) Schlegel, Plant City, FL; and Lorna (Harlan) Gorter, Staples, MN. She was a proud grandmother to ten and great-grandmother to fourteen. She is also survived by her sisters, Donna Plante and Dorothy Plante, who remained a cherished part of her life.
In her younger years, she fondly recalled working at Harold's Supper Club, but her grandchildren will forever treasure memories made on the family farm near Crow Wing State Park and in the family's orange grove in Plant City, FL. Following Jack's passing after their farming years, she embraced her independence and spent many seasons traveling between Lakeland, FL and Brainerd.
She was well known for her expertise in the kitchen-especially her unforgettable orange and lemon meringue pies and her amazing homemade waffles. She also enjoyed playing cards, from whist to a competitive game of Hand & Foot, and she rarely turned down the chance to play Rummikub with family & friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents, Leo and Marian Pickar; siblings James "Jim" Pickar and Richard "Bud" Pickar; and her much-loved grandson, Josh Tuomi. Special thanks to her great-granddaughters, Samantha and Sophie Humphrey, Becker, MN, for the loving care they gave her in her final days.
Her family takes comfort knowing that her legacy of love, laughter, and togetherness will live on in the generations she nurtured.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Brainerd, MN, on September 4, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning one hour prior. The family invites guests to join in celebrating her life by wearing bright colors, florals, or a bit of sparkle in her honor. Her ashes will be laid to rest with her husband, Jack, at a private burial at MN State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the
Alzheimer's Association.
