Lola Yount Obituary

Lola Jacquelyn Yount was born on May 25, 1943 and passed away on September 26, 2018. She is the daughter of local writer, Lola Aola Vandergriff, and the late Senator William Palmer Vandergriff. Shortly after Jackie's birth, her father relocated his wife and baby to San Antonio, Texas, to prepare for his deployment overseas. When he sailed to England, Jackie and her mother lived in Oklahoma with her grandparents while awaiting his return from WW II. In the ensuing years five siblings were born. The family remained in Oklahoma until 1960 when they began a life of travel and adventure as Bill Vandergriff followed his work throughout the Midwest and West Coast with the Department of Defense.

In the late 1960s Jackie began her own career with the Air Force at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, California. In 1970 she married Marine Sgt. Vance Yount, and his job took them to the East Coast. On her own again in 1978, she resumed her career with Civil Service at Holloman AFB, NM and retired after 40 years of service to her country where her life was filled with commendations, outstanding military co-workers and supervisors, and countless airmen who referred to her as "Mom." Throughout her life Jackie was involved in church work, Red Cross and other charities. She was an avid reader, artist, and devoted rescuer, protector, and lover of many of God's feline children.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Vandergriff; and her ex-husband. She is survived by her siblings: William Ladd Vandergriff and Judy; Rebecca Lynn Williams and Skip, Jamie Dean Vandergriff, Michael Orrin Vandergriff, Patrick Clay Vandergriff and Chrystal, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held in Laborcita Canyon on Sunday, October 7, at 10:00 a.m.

A beautiful woman of God with a kind hearted spirit that was second to none. I met Jackie at Holloman AFB while on active duty and we quickly became close friends. Down through the years the friendship grew to more like family in which she had a close relationship with my wife, children, and eventually my grandchildren. During the holiday season we could count on Jackie like clockwork to show up with her big smile and delicious cinnamon rolls. Jackie was there to comfort me when my own mom passed and I asked her to become my adopted mom and she gladly accepted. I'm reminded of a story Jackie told me on several occasions in which her own mother in times of trouble or when things wasn't going just right would say it's time to get a peanut butter sandwich and get the heck out of here. Well Jackie, I guess you grabbed your peanut butter sandwich and got the heck out of here. God created heaven for people like you!

I had the pleasure of working with Ms. Jackie at the 49th Dental Flight. She was a gem that lit up the office. Cared for us like her, "kids," made us laugh and gave us hugs and encouragement when needed. It was an honor Ms. Jackie

I worked with Jackie at Holloman AFB during the 90s and I gotta say - she had a warm smile and affectionate words for everyone.

Jackie, sweetheart, I wanted to post something but my head just wouldn't clear. Tonight, while talking with Becky, something suddenly hit me. Years ago we waited at the gate for Michael and his beloved Merrill to come down that hall carrying little Christina home from Russia. You were the first to scoop her into your arms. How strange life is that she would pass away so young. Still I have to smile at the thought of her waiting at the gate to fold her aunt Jackie into her arms. I bet she was first.

Jackie was my cousin. Rarely did we get opportunities to be together because we were usually in opposite ends of the world as children growing up. But she always kept us in the loop with her family and our grandparents. She was a very loving, kind, family oriented person. She reached out to people to include them in various events because she didn't want anyone to be alone in a new town especial the young airman, who did call her Mom. She was a faithful servant to God and her country and was famous for her delicious cinnamon rolls! The Blickenstaff's celebrate her life and cherish all the memories. She is reunited with everyone she has loved and lost in heaven including her cats. To our remaining cousins we send our love and affection & prayers for your families hoping you will celebrate Jackie's life and find peace in the memories you shared over years. Love you. Donna
