Philip Chavez Obituary

Philip John Chavez

Alamogordo - Philip John Chavez passed away in his sleep in the early morning hours of May 3, 2021 at his home in Alamogordo, at just 52. Philip was loved by so many and will be deeply missed.

Born January 26, 1969 in Alamogordo, NM to Reynaldo and Ramona Chavez, Phil was the second oldest of four siblings. Phil was the one who always kept the family on their toes, with his love of fun and streak of mischievousness. He sometimes came home with a broken bone or two to show for it. He graduated in 1988 from Alamogordo Senior High.

Phil was always great at making good friends and had an incredibly generous spirit. He marched to the beat of his own drum, but despite being set in his ways he would help anyone out at a moment's notice without question. A brilliant trumpet player, he inherited his skill for music from his dad. Phil loved and had a true gift for creating beautiful pieces with wood, usually while listening to AC/DC at uncomfortably high volumes. He loved getting new tools and utilizing them every chance he got. He could also grill like a champ, as long as you were buying. It wasn't unusual to get a late-night phone call from Phil, he loved to chat about "this, that and the other."

Philip probably wouldn't tell you that he was a lucky guy, but he always seemed to land on his feet: the job he needed would come through just in time, he'd have a place to stay if he needed one, and he found love more times than most (three marriages at last count). Our "Philly" didn't bounce back this time and our hearts just ache.

Philip is preceded in death by his parents, Reynaldo Chavez Sr. and Ramona Chavez. He is survived by his daughter, Marina Chavez and her three children; his brothers, Reynaldo Chavez Jr., Matthew Chavez and wife Sheila, and their sons Joseph and Marcelus; and sister Monci Hoadrea and husband Jimmy, and their children Jimmy and Zoey. Phil has numerous primos, Tias, Tios and friends who thought the world of him.

There will be a Celebration of Life mass for Philip in Alamogordo at Immaculate Conception Church on Saturday, May 15 at 9 am. May his memory be eternal.

My dear friend Phil I find it hard to believe you are gone. seems like yesterday you were visiting reminiscing about our sawmill days Las Ventanas and old times. I really enjoyed your company and the times we shared just weeks ago. Rest easy little brother. See you again someday.

Phillip, my heart is broken to pieces. I know our Lord knows what was best for you. I will miss you so very much. You made me laugh like no one else. I’m thankful to God I had the chance to spend the last months with you as one of your closest friends. You had my heart in so many ways. Our last conversation with each other was special and I will hold that close to my heart forever. I miss you and will always have you in prayer my special friend. Be at peace and rest now. With all my love Graciela Palafox-Ogas

I was saddened to hear about Phil! At one point in time in the 80’s, I think the Chavez and the Sanchez families were at every Immaculate Conception funtion together! I remember Phil was always cracking jokes, much to the chagrin of Mr Chavez! God bless him and the Chavez family!
