Floyd Herman Obituary

Floyd Lavern Herman, 90, of Valdosta, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at Southwell Health and Rehabilitation. Floyd had previously lived in Albany, Georgia for many years. Floyd was born in York Township, Minnesota to Lavern Herman and Margaret Hicks Herman.

He joined the United States Marine Corp after high school, which is how he ended up in Albany, GA. There he met and married his first wife, Majel Warren Herman. They were married until her death in 1975. Floyd then married Mary Bell Joiner Cook Herman; they were married until her death in 2024.

After the marines, Floyd worked for BF Goodrich. He decided very quickly he wanted to own his own business. He bought a Texaco Gas Station on the corner of Gillionville and Slappey Blvd. where he served many customers. He then bought an automobile repair shop and had a contract with Seaboard Coastline Railroad providing them with fuel for the engines. He had many customers where he provided fuel for home heating and farm equipment for the people of Albany and the surrounding area.

He obtained his real estate license where he helped families find their forever homes. Floyd also had a contract with the state and managed HUD properties throughout the southern and western part of the state.

After retiring, Floyd and Mary traveled to all 50 states. Most of these adventures were in their motor home, which they thoroughly enjoyed with their camping friends of Flint River Sams.

Floyd was an active member of Avalon UMC before his move to Valdosta. Floyd was a member and former commander of American Legion Post 30. He was also a former member of the Albany Jaycees and the Elks Lodge. Floyd loved people and never met a stranger; he was intentional in getting to know people.

Survivors include his children, Monroe Cook of Lee County, GA; Marilyn (Howard) Cunningham of Fairfax, Virginia; Stephen Herman of Albany, GA; Rhonda Hoffman of Valdosta, GA; his grandchildren, Jim Cook, Trey Cunningham, Mary (Michael) Kitlan, Meaghan (Seth) Cason, Makayla Hoffman; great grandchildren, Henry Cook and Kelly Kitlan. Floyd eagerly anticipated the arrival of Huxlee Cason in November of 2025. He was also survived by his siblings, Don (Marilyn) Herman, Joyce (Ron) Ulmer, Karen (Terry) Anderson, Harold Zabel, LaJean Herman and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents and wives, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Harlan Herman and his sister, Beverly Zabel, and son-in-law, Dale Hoffman.

As per his wishes, he will be cremated with no final farewell services. Kind words and expressions of sympathy can be left for the family at www.musicfuneralservices.com. The Herman family is being served by the professional and caring staff of Music Funeral Services of Valdosta.
