Jeannene Powers Obituary

Jeannene Elizabeth (Hayes) Powers, age 87, of Albany, Georgia, passed away on May 6, 2023, at her home. Jeannene professed her faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and was an active member of Christ Church of Albany. She was a beloved wife, mother and friend who will be missed beyond words.

Jeannene was born at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, in April of 1936. She was a 1954 graduate of Albany High School, and attended Valdosta State College, where she was a member of the Student Council, and where she met her future husband, a fighter-pilot and officer is the U.S. Air Force. Jeannene and her family lived on Air Force bases in the U.S. and around the world, until returning to Albany in 1970.

In Albany, Jeannene worked as a bookkeeper and office manager and was actively involved in the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), where she served as the Albany chapter president in 1999. She was also a member of the Albany chapter of the Benevolent and Protection Order of Elks since 2001, where she served as Treasurer and Chaplain and supported dozens of charitable fundraising projects.

Jeannene was proceeded in death by her husband, James Dale Powers, Sr.; her mother Ruby Hornbuckle Hayes; her father John Allison Hayes; and her brother, John Harry Hayes. She is survived by a large family, including: daughter Kelley Powers (George III) Ort of Parker, Colorado; son James Dale (Billie) Powers of Del Rio, Texas ; son John Austin (Sandy) Powers of Belmont, North Carolina ; grandchildren Shawn (Kelli) Powers; Roxana (Jerry) Lopez; Alex (Deana) Powers; Aaron Powers; Lauren (Robert) Burrow; George (Courtney) Ort IV; Taylor James (Corina) Ort; Katie (Doug) Horgen; 16 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; brother Bob (Becky) Hayes; sister Mickie (Joey) Bateman; sister-in-law Judy Hayes.

The family wishes to thank the many healthcare professionals for the expert medical services they provided to our Mother. We especially appreciate and acknowledge Dakota Snipes, Cumonica Shider, Lydia Scott, Jamilla Reaves, Sylvia Brown and Tessa Harnage, whose compassionate and professional care allowed her to remain at home for the past several months, and peacefully transition from this life to her Heavenly home.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Mathews Funeral Home in Albany. The family will receive friends from 10am - 11am, with the service beginning immediately thereafter. Interment will follow the service at Crown Hill Cemetery. Pastor Gary Brady will officiate.

Flowers are welcomed or donations may be made to her church in memory of Jeannene to Christ Church of Albany, 505 Byron Plantation Road, Albany, GA 31721.
