William Culbreth Obituary

William "Bill" Paulk Culbreth died on December 13, 2022, at his residence.

The memorial service will be held at 11 AM Friday, December 16th at Porterfield United Methodist Church with the committal service at 2 PM at Salem Baptist Church cemetery in Edison. Rev. Chuck Knight will officiate. The family will receive friends Friday from 10 AM until 11 AM.

Bill was born on January 15, 1941, in Bainbridge, the son of William W. Culbreth and Etna Paulk Chambless. He was the paternal grandson of Larken C. Culbreth and Leila Steadham of Bainbridge, and the maternal great-grandson of Sarah Elizabeth Paulk Chambless of Alapaha.

Bill graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1959. He attended Mercer University and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1964 with a B.S. degree in education. In 1972 he earned his master's degree in education from the University of Georgia.

Bill devoted forty years of his professional life in service to others where he touched the lives of thousands of children and young adults as a dedicated teacher and guidance counselor. He retired from the Dougherty County School System where he was the Director of Guidance at Albany High School.

He was also an instructor at Fort Union Military Academy in Virginia and Headmaster of Gibbons Hall School for Boys in Asheville, NC.

Bill was active in summer camp work in the 1960's and 1970's. He was administration director at Camp Ridgecrest for Boys, Camp Crestridge for Girls and Camp Rockmont in Black Mt., NC.

Bill was a member of the American School Counselor's Association, American Counselor's Association and Georgia School Counselor's Association. He served three terms as state treasurer and was state president of G.S.C.A. during the 1992-1993 association year.

Bill was a man of faith and was a member of Porterfield United Methodist Church. He enjoyed teaching adult Sunday school classes and serving as an usher. He loved hearing a good sermon and singing his favorite church hymns.

Bill loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time at his cabin in the Black Mountains of North Carolina. He took great joy in hiking parts of the Appalachian Mountains with family and friends.

Bill is survived by his wife, Patricia Scott Culbreth; daughter, Mary Emily Robbins (Tripp); son, Gary Paulk Culbreth; two granddaughters: Rebecca Ann Robbins and Emily Madison Robbins; and a great-granddaughter, Chloe Robbins.
