Susan Underwood Seward
Susan Underwood Seward, 78, died at her Concord, MA home on Friday, October 19th following a long illness.

Susan was born in Amarillo, Texas in 1940 to Robert Ezra Underwood and Roberta Carroll Underwood. She was predeceased by sisters Robin Russell and Leslie Underwood.

Susan attended the Hockaday School in Dallas; Smith College, Massachusetts; and graduated from the University of Texas, Austin. Susan married Thomas A. Fredericks in 1959. Following Thomas's death, she married Frederick D. Seward in 1973. As a devout Catholic and an unapologetic Democrat, with southern roots and a New England sensibility, Susan embodied the values of social justice and compassion through her work as an elementary school teacher in California, through volunteer service at the Montessori School and at the Eliot Center in Concord, and by teaching Sunday School at Holy Family. She also served as Secretary of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which reaches out to those in need.

As a loving mother her care and support kept our bi-coastal family together. She is survived by her husband, Fred; her children and stepchildren, Barbara Fredericks, John D. Fredericks, Robert U. Seward, and Anne D. Seward; their spouses Lisa Walker Fredericks, Tracey Hill, and Pat Kirkhuff; and by her grandchildren, Thomas Fredericks, Blaise Fredericks-Place, Moselle Fredericks, Simon Fredericks-Place, Charlie Fredericks, and Laurence (Laurie) Hill-Seward.

A funeral mass will be held at Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord, MA on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at 10:00 am, followed by a burial service at St. Bernard's Cemetery and a reception at her home.

The family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o Holy Family Parish, P.O. Box 220, Concord, MA 01742. To share a remembrance or to send a condolence in Susan's online guestbook, please visit

I am so very sorry for your loss Barbara. I remember your Mom out in her garden behind the barn--gloves on picking snap sugar pea pods! I had never had a freshly picked one until she offered it to me. She said it was like candy and it was! She was a lovely woman.
