Bettye Puryear Obituary

Bettye Mae Puryear October 8, 1944 - September 10, 2025 Bettye Mae Wilson was born in Bogalusa, Louisiana on October 8, 1944, to Josie Robertson and Edgar Wilson. She was the third child of four. She spent much of her childhood with her maternal grandmother, Julia Mickel, living with her and assisting her with her childcare business. While under her care, she attended Second Baptist Church. Bettye was a proud graduate of Central High School, Class of 1962. After graduating from high school, she matriculated to Southern University where she earned a bachelor's degree in education. After receiving her degree in 1966, Bettye relocated to Chicago and began her career as an educator with Chicago Public Schools. Bettye later continued her education and attained a Master of Arts Degree in Library Science from Chicago State University. She passionately educated students in her role as a history teacher. Bettye loved Black History and as a result, she initiated the "Know Your Heritage" at South Shore High School, a televised competition where students from various local schools competed in the areas of Black Studies. In 1980, Bettye married the love of her life, Richard Puryear. Richard proved to be more than a lifelong partner but a loving and protective husband. A primary focus of Bettye's life was her son, Vegan. She adored him and raised him to become a productive young man. She took great pride in his success. After 34 years of service rendered in teaching and leadership with Chicago Public Schools, Bettye retired in 2000. After retiring, Bettye and Richard became snowbirds. They would spend their winters in Louisiana. They later acquired property in Virginia so they could divide their time between Chicago, Bogalusa and Cartersville, Virginia. Bettye and Richard enjoyed spending time traveling. They would take road trips to many of their destinations. Richard would be the pilot, and Bettye was the co- pilot during their many adventures. Bettye had a variety of interests, but she especially enjoyed playing cards. Bid Whist was her favorite card game. Bettye also enjoyed shopping! She and her friend, Myrtle Jordan spent lots of time in search of bargains. Her family members often called her "The World's Greatest Shopper." Bettye was selfless, caring, kind, loving and an inspiration to countless people she encountered. She touched so many lives throughout her years. She was a phenomenal daughter, amazing sister, awesome aunt and loving cousin. Bettye was a Lupus Survivor and counseled many youths who lived with the condition through their Lupus Support Guild. Bettye will be remembered as a strong woman of faith. She blessed and changed lives daily. Bettye lived her life understanding that she was loved and deeply appreciated. Bettye professed her faith and trust in God. She was a long-time member of Vernon Park Church of God where she served faithfully on the Usher Board for over 50 years. She eventually transitioned to Apostolic Church of God where she remained a member until her death. On September 10, 2025, Bettye gained her heavenly wings. Bettye leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, Richard Puryear, her son, Vegan K. Fleming, stepsons, Darren (Marie) Nichols and Richard Puryear, Jr. four nephews, Darryl (Sharon) Robertson, Dewayne Ross, Wilon (Crystal) Ross, and Mark (Camry) Ross, a niece Bonita Beans-Blanco Salas, two sisters-in law, Ida "Jean" Puryear and Linda Puryear and a beloved friend, Lois Travillion along with a host of cherished relatives, classmates and friends. She is proceeded in death by her parents and her siblings, Pearlina Robertson, James Banks and Casandra Ross. Finally, Bettye's work is done; her earthly purpose has been fulfilled. Bettye is swaying like a beautiful palm tree in the permanently perfect breeze of heaven. A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025 from 12:00PM – 1:00PM followed by the funeral service at 1:00PM at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Interment – Bogalusa Cemetery.
