Sandra Grather Garcia

Sandra Grather Garcia, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away on December 20, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on October 13, 1946, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Sandra's life was a tapestry of dedication to her family, her students, and her community.
Sandra's early years were spent in New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish with her loving parents, the late Walter J. Grather Jr. and Nerli Weber Grather, as well as her siblings, Cynthia "Puddy" Grather Kooke and the late Walter J. "Jay" Grather III. Sandra is the cherished mother of Dr. Kelly Garcia Nation and Ashley Garcia Gluege and proud grandmother of Scarlet Ashley Nation, Indiana Thomas Nation, Lucian Kelly Gluege, and Lucas Kaine Gluege, who will carry forward her legacy of kindness and compassion. Sandra also leaves behind a host of extended family members and friends, all of whom she loved dearly.
A lifelong learner and educator, Sandra's academic journey led her to achieve a master's degree plus 60 hours of continued education. Her passion for knowledge was only matched by her dedication to imparting it to others. Sandra's career as a teacher in St. Bernard Parish and St. Tammany Parish was marked by her unwavering commitment to her students and her colleagues. Always striving to stay active in her community, Sandra was a member of the St. Bernard Retired Teachers Association. Her role as a Special Olympics coordinator for St. Bernard Parish at both the local and state levels showcased her belief in the potential of every individual.
Sandra's legacy in education is complemented by her devout faith and service to her church. She served as a St. Louise de Marillac Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and also as a lector, touching the lives of many with her grace and spirituality.
Sandra was an avid card player, a voracious reader, a melodious singer, and an enthusiastic traveler. Each hobby was an avenue through which she connected with others and shared her exuberant spirit.
As we bid farewell to Sandra, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, faith, and love. Her memory will continue to inspire those who knew her, and her impact will be felt for generations to come.
