Dear Mina and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. I met Derek at training in Maryland many years ago. He pulled a joke on some unsuspecting PIO's by speaking Chinese on a phone call. Throughout the years when our PIO paths crossed it was nice to reacquaint with an old friend. My heart goes out to you.

I am greatful that I was blessed to have meet Dereck we often share sport and spoke about Our Lord and Savior he didnt see color he saw another human being a Brother in christ. There is no one like him with such a Humble Spirit always smiling never allow his title or position to become a factor in how he received or treated other he will be greatly missed. Mina and family, Derek was always a joy to be around in the newsroom, not just for his extraordinary talent, but for his extraordinary personality and spirit. I was sad when he left the DN. I was stunned and so deeply saddened by his tragic and untimely passing. I will never forget his gigantic smile and those cute visits that you and Chloe made when bringing treats or dinner to him at work. May the Lord bless and comfort you at this difficult time. I was truly sorry to hear of Derek's passing. He was an amazing guy. Don't tell the others, but he was always my favorite newspaper reporter and I was thrilled when he was hired by DPS. I'm just sad that it was my old job so I never got the chance to work with him everyday. I can't even begin to imagine what you are all going through but I pray that your family is surrounded by God's love at this time.

Dear Mina and children, my heart is still broken from hearing the news. I am still trying to understand and comprehend all that has happened. Derek was one of the most unique people I have ever known. He was loved by everyone who knew him. I am so very thankful that I had the opportunity to spend time with him and learn from him. He is an example of how each of us should be. He had no malice, and respected everyone. You and your little family will be in our thoughts and prayers every day. I am honored and grateful to have known him, and will miss him dearly. May God be with you and your children. What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why he left this earth so soon, or why he left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remmember not just that he died, but that he lived and his life gave you memories to beauiful to ever forget.
