Derek Thomas Jensen Obituary

Oxford - Funeral services for Derek Thomas Jensen, 37, of Oxford, will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Golden Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Roland Brown officiating. Derek will lie in state one hour prior to services. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory. Mr. Jensen died Thursday in Anniston as a result of a tragic bicycling accident. Survivors include his wife, Mina Ashley Jensen, of Oxford; his daughter, Chloe Abigail Jensen, of Oxford; two sons, Logan Naylor Jensen and Cooper Hollis Jensen, both of Oxford; his parents, Gary M. and Susan J. Jensen, of Springville, Utah; his brother, Kurt Robert Jensen, of Ogden, Utah; and his sister, Lisa Anne Jensen, of Springville, Utah. Derek was a remarkable, dynamic man who brought laughter and joy to all those who knew him. He excelled in every aspect of life and was a sterling example of sincere love and acceptance. Derek received a Bachelor's degree from Utah State University of dearly loved the USU Aggies. He did graduate work in political science at the University of Utah. Derek was employed as Director of Public Affairs at the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston. Prior to this, Derek was a public information officer for FEMA in Denver, Colo., a state homeland security officer for the state of Utah and the lead crime reporter for the Utah-based newspaper The Deseret News. Derek was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served a church mission in Taiwan. He loved opportunities to serve in Christian capacities and spent much time on service projects and teaching youth Sunday school. He found great joy in athletic activities, including basketball, football, competitive running and more than anything bicycling. Derek regularly rode his bike 50 miles a day and loved every mile he logged on it. Derek was an amazing father, a loving husband and an irreplaceable person in the lives of countless people. He will be missed daily by his family, friends and co-workers.

Dear Mina and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. I met Derek at training in Maryland many years ago. He pulled a joke on some unsuspecting PIO's by speaking Chinese on a phone call. Throughout the years when our PIO paths crossed it was nice to reacquaint with an old friend. My heart goes out to you.

Mina and family, Derek was always a joy to be around in the newsroom, not just for his extraordinary talent, but for his extraordinary personality and spirit. I was sad when he left the DN. I was stunned and so deeply saddened by his tragic and untimely passing. I will never forget his gigantic smile and those cute visits that you and Chloe made when bringing treats or dinner to him at work. May the Lord bless and comfort you at this difficult time. You are in my prayers.

I was truly sorry to hear of Derek's passing. He was an amazing guy. Don't tell the others, but he was always my favorite newspaper reporter and I was thrilled when he was hired by DPS. I'm just sad that it was my old job so I never got the chance to work with him everyday. I can't even begin to imagine what you are all going through but I pray that your family is surrounded by God's love at this time.

Dear Mina and children, my heart is still broken from hearing the news. I am still trying to understand and comprehend all that has happened. Derek was one of the most unique people I have ever known. He was loved by everyone who knew him. I am so very thankful that I had the opportunity to spend time with him and learn from him. He is an example of how each of us should be. He had no malice, and respected everyone. You and your little family will be in our thoughts and prayers every day. I am honored and grateful to have known him, and will miss him dearly. May God be with you and your children. We love you guys and we pray the lord's spirit will be with you and comfort you as you continue going forward.

What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why he left this earth so soon, or why he left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remmember not just that he died, but that he lived and his life gave you memories to beauiful to ever forget.
Mina you and you children are in our prayer.

Our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Derek Jenson. We have been touched so greatly by his passing; not because we knew him, we didn't, but because he was a dear friend of our son Bob Davis, one of his cycling buddies. May God in His infinite love and grace undergird each of you as you come to grips with this awful tragedy. Our prayers are with each of you. Charles and Robbie Davis.....Aliceville, Al.
