Douglas W. McCarty Obituary

Funeral service for Col. Douglas W. McCarty, 82, will be Friday, October 21, 2016, at 4 p.m. at K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center Chapel with Father James Macey officiating. There will be a visitation prior to the service at 3 p.m. on the same day. Burial will take place at Jacksonville City Cemetery. Col. McCarty passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016, at Jacksonville RMC. He is survived by his daughters, Stephanie (Keith) White, of Oklahoma City, Okla., Michele (Thomas) Turecek, of Jacksonville and Suzanne (Howard) Bascher, of Waynesville, Mo.; his son, Matthew McCarty, of Weaver; his grandchildren, Megann (Troy) Frazier, of Oklahoma City, Okla., Caitlin Turecek, of Jacksonville and Ethan Elrod, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; his great-grandson, Dax Frazier, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; his nieces, Polly Ann (Joe) McFate and Sally Raab, and his nephew, Stephen Raab. Col. McCarty was an avid reader and donated thousands of dollars worth of books to the local library. He was an Alabama fan, a tennis player and a lover of life, laughter and knowledge. He was a graduate of the New York Military Academy. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with honors in 1956 and was commissioned as the Distinguished Military Graduate in the Regular Army. His military career spanned three decades and his military education included the Army Command and General Staff College, the Defense Language Institute, the Italian Staff College and the Army War College. During his service he served a tour in Vietnam, Korea, Hawaii and two tours in Italy. His awards and commendations include the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He has also been awarded the General Staff Identification Badge and the Parachutist Badge. Col. McCarty retired as Chief of Staff at Ft. McClellan in 1986. Col. McCarty was preceded in death by his parents, Carmen and Mary McCarty; his beloved wife of 39 years, Patricia McCarty; his son, James McCarty and his sister, Phyllis Raab. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Jacksonville public library at 200 Pelham Rd South, Jacksonville, AL 36265.
