Faye Brown Obituary

A funeral service for Dr. Faye M. Brown, age 95, of Jacksonville will be held at the K. L. Brown Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Andy Curtis officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Her cremated remains will be buried with her husband at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. Faye died Wednesday at The Harbor at Legacy Village in Jacksonville. Faye was born on June 7, 1930, one of nine children, to William and Connie Mattox, in Clay County, Alabama. She graduated from Clay County High School in Ashland and attended Alabama College (University of Montevallo) and graduated with her B.S. degree from Jacksonville State College. She taught Elementary and Special Education in Eastaboga and Jacksonville and later, went on to earn her master's degree and doctorate from the University of Alabama in education. She was head of Special Education in the Jefferson County School System for several years before going to work with the Alabama Board of Education in Montgomery. While serving on the faculty of Auburn University at Montgomery, she was named Director of the Southeast Regional Resource Center which covered southeastern states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. This organization provided assistance to members in establishing individualized programs for all handicapped children in their areas. In 1980, Gov. Fob James appointed her to the Alabama Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. She retired from Auburn University in Montgomery in 1985 and moved to Clanton to help care for her daughter, Connie, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Faye was always active in her church and had a love for mission work. She worked extensively with Servants in Faith and Technology (SIFAT) in Ecuador, to establish church-based day care facilities for children that were being left at home alone while their parents worked. She wrote the curriculum for individuals that taught at these facilities. Faye is survived by her son, Koven L. (K.L.) Brown and his wife, Mandee of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Emily Avery and her husband, James of Young Harris, GA; Jason Mills and his wife, Danielle of Prattville; Christin Polk and her husband, Heath of Clanton, and Jeromy Cox and his wife, Embry of Clanton; 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren; a brother, LTC Lenn Mattox, USA Ret. of Columbiana and numerous nieces and nephews she dearly loved. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace K. (Jap) Brown; daughter, Connie Faye Cox; granddaughter, Allison Faye Brown; one sister, and six brothers. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to SIFAT, 2944 County Road 113, Lineville, AL 36266 or a favorite charity.
