Samuel Higginbotham Obituary

Samuel S. "Sammy" Higginbotham, 84, passed away on July 6, 2016, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife and constant companion of 64 years, Delores "Dee" Higginbotham, and his beloved son, Lenn, as well as a vast group of friends and loved ones. Sam was born in Anniston on December 24, 1931 to Ollis and Louise Higginbotham. He and his family resided in Oxford from the time they built their home shortly after Sam returned from serving in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict. Employed briefly at Monsanto, Sam spent his working life at Anniston Auto Parts, retiring as Vice President of Sales. A man of many talents and passions, Sam's life centered around his family, his church and his music. His father found the resources for him to attend a music school at a young age and he began that part of his life as a member and Junior Director of the Anniston High School Band. During his life, he was honored to be called to several area churches as Director of Music and Song Leader. He sang in Quartet with Robert Gordon, Wayne Rawlings, Virgil Deshler and Jane Batey for over three decades. Pallbearers will be Robert Gordon, Wayne Rawlings, Virgil Deshler, Danny Campbell, Leon Dean, Jimmy Ogburn and Joe Bynum. Honorary pallbearers will be his Braca Sunday School Class where he and his close friend, Joe Lett, taught on alternate Sundays for over 20 years. Visitation will be from 1 - 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the Chapel at the First Baptist Church of Oxford. His long-time friend, the Reverend William "Buddy" Nelson will conduct the funeral service at 2 p.m. followed immediately by a graveside service at Forestlawn Gardens. The family requests that a love offering be sent to the First Baptist Church of Oxford in lieu of flowers. www.millerfuneralhomeoxford.com Miller Funeral Home & Crematory Oxford, AL (256) 831-4611 A Brown Service Authorized Funeral Home Chosen #1 funeral home by the readers of The Anniston Star for 6 consecutive years.
