ABERDEEN — Beverly Davis Strayhorn went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 21, 2025, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Beverly was born September 15, 1949, to William Carroll (Bill) Davis and Nancy Davis in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem and went on to receive an undergraduate degree in Interior Design from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
While at UNCG, she met a special man, Jimmy Strayhorn, who she married in June 1972 and remained happily married to for 53 years. In her early days of marriage to Jimmy, while living in Whiteville, NC, Beverly became locally famous for her incredible homemade cinnamon buns. This led to the formation of a catering company called Dough Girls with a good friend. Though Dough Girls was short lived, her love of cooking and entertaining remained and was passed along to her three children.
Beverly was known for her creativity outside of the kitchen as well, spending much of her free time painting and sewing. She delighted in outfitting her children and grandchildren in handmade clothes for every occasion. She worked as an Interior Designer for the early part of her career before she and Jimmy settled in Wadesboro, NC, where they lived for over three decades.
After her children were in school, Beverly decided to pursue school counseling. She obtained a masters degree in Child Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and went on to work at Anson County Schools for two decades. Before retiring, she served the children of Anson County at both Wadesboro Primary School and Anson Early College. One of her greatest accomplishments was in her final year, when every student at Anson Early College received acceptance into a full college program.
Beverly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, which drove her decision to move to Pinehurst, NC, in her later years. She was thrilled to live next door to her two oldest grandchildren for the majority of that time, teaching them her love of art and sewing.
Beverly is survived by her husband, Jimmy Strayhorn, mother, Nancy Davis, brother, William Carroll Davis Jr (Ann), children, William Andrew Strayhorn (Suzanne), Sarah White (Matt), Carrie McLauchlan (Tyler), and grandchildren, Harker Strayhorn, Reese Strayhorn, and Eleanor McLauchlan. She was preceded in death by her father, William Carroll (Bill) Davis.
A service will be held at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst, NC, at 2 p.m. on Saturday October 25, 2025, to remember Beverly. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the ceremony from 1-2 p.m.
