Alan Gartenberg Obituary

Dr. Alan L. "Lanny" Gartenberg

Plainfield - Dr. Alan L. "Lanny" Gartenberg, 78, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2018.

Lanny was born May 25, 1940, in Plainfield, NJ, and was the son of the late Samuel and Fay Gartenberg of Plainfield, NJ. He was a graduate of Lafayette College and continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine where he graduated with the Class of 1965. Lanny was an honorably discharged veteran who served in the U.S. Army from 1965-1967 and attained the rank of Captain. While in the service, he was a practicing Dentist at Fort Hood who treated soldiers prior to their deployment during the Vietnam War.

Lanny managed his own dental practice for 34 years in Brick, NJ, and for many years, he volunteered as a dentist at the night clinic of the Paul Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood for those in need. He was extremely proud and passionate about his family and loved spending time with them. His favorite activities included reading, playing tennis, swimming, travelling and following the financial trends in the stock market. Lanny was loved by everyone who knew him and will be dearly missed by both family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Lucille; his children, Steven Gartenberg and his wife, Nancy and his daughter, Jill Jaclin and her husband, Gregg, all of West Windsor; and his four grandchildren Samuel, Emma, Rachel and Ben.

Funeral services and interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Lanny's memory to the Jewish Family & Children's Service, 707 Alexander Road, Suite 102, Princeton, NJ 08540.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ.

On a chance meeting; he stopped, we chatted and the bond was sealed. Lanny was in our life for what seemingly was a brief, but memorable moment. He exuded a genuine zest for life and brought joy to those who knew him. We will always remember his kindness & concern for others. He is much loved by family and friends and will be sorely missed.

What a great person. He inspired me when he attended college and worked during the Summer at Plainfield Avenue Playground. I wondered what ever happened to him it's been over fifty years since then.He always took time to encourage kids from the projects across the street. He made us feel special. His family has lost a wonderful person I share your loss.

Dear Lucille, We mourn the passing of Lannie along with you and your wonderful family. He was an unusual person in today's world- steadfast in his beliefs and ethical values. We all benefitted from his love and caring as he always listened carefully. Lucille, you were his spark and we know you will continue to light up the lives of all who know you. Our love, Judy and Mel
