The eulogy for my Nanny Angie:
First my family & I would like to thank everyone who has come to pay their last respects to my grandmother as well as all of the people who have sent food, love & their condolences.
This is a very somber time for us. We have lost the matriarch of our family. My grandmother was the epitome of a wife, a sister, a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother all at the same time. She always had something to give to all of us whether it was love, advice or sometimes just some good-ole cash! That's how she inherited the name Mrs. Claus. I can't think of one time that she was too busy or too tired to give her love, her time or her escarole & beans. I would invite friends over during the holidays & though she just met them, she'd give them cash too. I finally figured out why I had so many friends!
I have so many wonderful memories of her; 46 years of them. I am so very grateful at my age to have had a grandmother in my life this long especially one like my Nanny Angie. She taught me many lessons while my parents were hustling away at the Surf Club 'til the wee hours of the morning. I remember the evening she watched me while my parents were in the hospital for the birth of my sister Michele. She cried with joy when we got the call that Michele was born while I cried counting the amount of money I had just lost in inheritance.
I'm sure many of you here have great memories of my grandmother too. I've been told many wonderful stories about her. Too many to reminisce. The one staple in many of these stories were her agile feet. The one story that has always remained with me was the one where at someone's funeral, as she was walking downhill to the gravesite, she started to pick up speed as everyone watched in amazement and took bets on whether she was going to fall in the hole or not; and only by the grace of God, she missed by inches.
As you can probably tell by now I am a believer in levity in a time like now. But all joking aside, this is a loss that all the levity in the world cannot erase. The one thing that gives me joy is to think about the "dinner table" in the sky. At both heads of the table sit my Grandfather Frank & my Uncle John. Alongside of them is my Grandfather Bob & now, my Grandmother Angie. Frank is yelling in to the kitchen wondering why dinner has yet to be served, my Uncle John is running around inviting all of heaven to join them, my Grandfather Bobby is pouring the drinks as he drinks a vodka tonic & my grandmother Angie is in the kitchen, where she's the happiest, with a smile on her face & a manhattan in her hand. Though I am in no rush to get there, it does provide my some solace to know that all of them will be waiting for me some day.
On another note, I would just like to commend my mother for what she has done in the past 7 years for both of her parents. I have never seen or heard of anyone who has sacrificed what she has to make sure that her parent's last days on this Earth were good ones. She has set a bar that I'm not sure can be attained. If you look up the word "caretaker" & "daughter" in Webster's dictionary a photo of my mother should be next to it. Mom, I only hope that you find peace in your life & reward yourself for what you have done. You've earned it & deserve it. Poppy Frank & Nanny Angie are looking down on you with pride that they created a woman as special as you!
