Ann Thompson Obituary

Ann Cullen Thompson

AGE: 72 • Old Bridge

Ann Cullen Thompson, age 72, was born on October 26, 1942 and left us on April 26, 2015. She was born in Dublin, Ireland moving to the US in 1952 and spent most of her childhood living in Perth Amboy where she went to school through her high school days. She was employed at South Amboy Memorial Hospital & Community Mental Health Center-Horizon North Program for 20 years. Her career and passion came from working with those affected by mental illness with whom she made laugh and smile on a daily basis. Ann had a zest for life; all those who met her; even once; remembered her. She touched the lives and hearts of so many people. When Ann had rough/tough times her spirit and energy never left her. She personified "when life hands you lemons make lemonade".

Ann is predeceased by her parents Marie & John Cullen and her son Shaun Thompson. Ann is survived by her son Richard (Rick) Thompson, her granddaughters Paige and Nora Thompson who were the light of her life and many close friends whose life she lit up.

A service is scheduled at St. Joseph Mausoleum, 360 Broadway in Keyport NJ on Saturday May 16th at 10:30am.

I was a neighbor of Ann's in the mid 1960s. We lived in Rome, NY. She was such a sweet person. In 2013 I connected with her on Facebook and then on phone. I recorded the conversation and I'm glad I still have it. I never forgot Ann and feel blessed that I spoke to her one last time later in life. I will always have warm feelings for Ann who was a good friend of my mother (Helen Snellbacher)

My Mistake, Paige & Nora are Ann's granddaughters, not her nieces. They are MY nieces!

Ann was a dear, warm, loving spirit, who was always gracious and welcoming. It was a joy to see her with her nieces Paige and Nora, who she loved beyond measure. Her gentle, loving spirit will be missed.

Here's a poem I find comforting that might help someone else.
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

She was young at heart and delighted with all the delights in the world, especially the deep love she had for her sons, her granddaughters, and special friends. She had a beautiful speaking voice and she used it to be funny and to connect very meaningfully with other people. One of her granddaughters did a project on immigration a few years ago and Ann's moving account of meeting the great lady dressed in green, the Statue of Liberty, as she arrived in New York from Ireland in 1952, was a centerpiece of the project. My deepest sympathy to her son Rick, her granddaughters Paige and Nora, and all the friends, including Lauren, whose childhoods she infused with her fun and loving spirit. May we all remember Ann's joy of life and all the love in her heart as we honor all the good she did in the world while she was here.
I am very sad to lose her and I am very grateful to have known her.
