Cecil Vroom Obituary
AGE: 96 • Oldwick
Cecil VanArsdale Vroom, 96, of Oldwick, NJ, loving father, grandpa, great-papa, beloved uncle, and a great friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, in the comfort of his home. He was born in the village of Oldwick on August 5, 1919, and lived in Oldwick his entire life. He was the son of the late John Warren Vroom and Ella May (Sutton) Vroom and was the last of nine siblings. Cecil graduated from Somerville High School in Somerville, NJ. He worked for Schiable Bakery prior to enlisting in the Army. He was a proud veteran of WW II, serving in North Africa and Italy. He was employed by the Belle Mead Army Depot before starting his own business, Vroom Tree Service. He was a Scoutmaster of the Oldwick Boy Scout Troop before and after serving in the military. Cecil was the sole remaining charter member of the Oldwick Fire Company and the youngest member to join at the age of 18, recently being honored as a Life Member. In 2013 he was Grand Marshall for the fire company's 75th anniversary parade.
He was a beekeeper and enjoyed playing baseball, bowling, deer hunting, gardening, baking, cooking and canning fruits and vegetables from his garden and apple orchard, sharing them with family and friends. He was famous for his home-made pies and ice cream, especially popular with his family.
He is predeceased by his devoted wife of 51 years, Dorothy (Haycock) Vroom. Surviving are his daughter, Susan, and son-in-law, Art Gerlich of Lebanon Township, NJ, a son, Aaron Vroom, of Union Township, NJ, grandchildren Aaron Gerlich of Morris Plains, NJ, Wendy (Eric) Sibley of Washington, DC, Kristy (Aaron) Buskirk of Tiffin, Ohio, and great-grandchildren Celeste, Jake, Asher, Luke, Esmae, many nieces, nephews and loyal friends who thought the world of him. He will be greatly missed.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 11:00 am at the New Germantown Cemetery, Joliet Street, Oldwick, NJ, 08858. In lieu of flowers, donations in Cecil's memory may be made to the Oldwick Fire Company, P.O. Box 83, Oldwick, NJ 08858 or to Hunterdon Hospice, 2100 Wescott Drive, Flemington, NJ 08822.
