Daniel Carluccio Obituary

Daniel J. Carluccio

AGE: 71 • Toms River

Passed away on January 18, 2012 after a heroic three and a half year battle with leukemia and the consequent relapse. Born in Hoboken, Dan was raised in Keansburg and settled in Toms River. He was one of the great trial lawyers in New Jersey having graduated St. Peters College and New York University Law School.

Surviving are his wife Judith (nee Filker) of 46 years, daughter Michel and her husband John and their children Evelyn and Roxane, son Matthew and his wife Sarah and their son Leonardo. He is also survived by his brothers Paul, David and Joseph, and a sister Nancy. He was predeceased by his parents Paul and Evelyn Carluccio.

Dan honored the legal profession by being a Supreme Court Certified Civil Trial Attorney and Criminal Trial Attorney. He served as Public Defender for Ocean and Burlington Counties. He was General Counsel for the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. He was appointed by Governor James Florio as the Ocean County Prosecutor. He was President of the Ocean County Bar Association. He personally tried 15 murder cases. Since 1997, he was a partner at the firm now known as Carluccio, Leone, Dimon, Doyle & Sacks. He was elected twice to the Democratic National Convention. In 2009, Dan received the James McLaughlin Award honoring his outstanding service as a trial attorney by the New Jersey State Bar Association. That same year, Dan was presented with the Ocean County Bar Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. For six consecutive years, Dan has been the recipient of New Jersey Super Lawyer. Dan was passionate in everything he did. He and Judith stayed young together for decades enjoying their love. They were fondest of family, friends, food, travel, theatre, movies, social causes, and the environment. In many of Dan's efforts he was a leader and a fighter. He was proudest when he defended or protected the underdog. He was beloved and respected by his community and his profession for his skill, intellect, caring and humanity.

Dear Judith and Family,
I'm regret not being with my sister Rita and John this passed August when Dan graciously met with them to reconnect with cousins. We were the other Keansburg Carluccio's, Sal's children. Since reading Dan's family history, I've joined Ancestry.com to continue with what Dan started, and so much wanted to get to meet your family. Any information I gather, I will be sure to pass on to you, I know how much Dan would have received. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

I first met Dan when he was named the head of the Governor's Authorities Unit and I joined his staff as Deputy Director. He personified the concept of a dedicated public servant yet did so with grace and humor. It's a loss for all of New Jersey. My sincere condolences to Judy and the family he so adored.

Dan Carluccio exhibited passion and humanity in a trial in which he excoriated the killer for refusing to reveal the whereabouts of his victim's body to ease her family's pain. He demonstrated rare courage with his tenacity in a mob murder trial in the face of death threats. He set the bar for what a county prosecutor and true humanitarian should be. I send prayers and deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Dan Carluccio was one of my all-time best friends. We almost got him elected to Congress in the 1970s. We had so much fun beating around Ocean, Burlington, and Camden Counties playing video games until the dim hours of the morning trying to get the right political endorsements. The way politics is really played. No one ever spoke more eloquently from the heart with such conviction. Dan's heroes were Abraham Lincoln and Clarence Darrow. My hero was Dan Carluccio. I will never forget you my friend. Never.

January 23, 2012

Dan was the ultimate attorney.
As a former O.C. Sheriff's Officer, I was regularly in the presence of Mr. Carluccio, and he was the consumate professional for his clients, yet never failed to thank the law enforcement community for their service. My heart goes out to his family, and those who were positively affected by Dan's service.
